Hi, I want to run some windows CAD software to design an enclosure for my DIY project. I've heard that there are some good ones, but know zippo about them. Any advice from my electro-music.com buds would be great! So what's the scoop?

Yes, though I'm hoping for freeware, I am a poor musician! Isn't there something called Wine? Or does the GNU project have something? I should Google it but I'm lazy and busy, maybe I'll search later tonight! Thanks for the link!

VirtualBox from Sun is free. But you still need a Windows OS.

If you install a linux of some flavour, then Wine is supposed to run Windows apps without installing a Windows OS. I have no idea how well it works, but it's free so mabye worth a try.

So let me get this straight. I can run Linux on my Mac, then run Wine on top of that? That's twisted! I must try it! What Linux distro will run on a Mac?

Taking it one step further: run VirtualBox on OSX, then Linux on VirtualBox, then Wine on Linux. I wonder if that would work?

Well, my CDROM drive doesn't work, so I have no way of telling VirtualBox that I have a windows disk, which I do. So that's out. It's not important, I don't want to play the operating system game that much. Thanks for your ideas, DJ.

There's also Crossover although Codeweavers would like some money for their time and effort as well.

I'd recommend getting your CD drive fixed/replaced so you can use VirtualBox. I swear by it. I started using it in November and I can't imagine living without it Smile

If you have another system, make an ISO image of your Windows DVD.
Hopefully Virtual Box lets you mount an ISO image.

Vmware does this, but isn't free.

Why not just run Wine on the Mac?

Well, the reason to do this went away so i ended up spending money on software that I didn't need. Oh well, life is too short to worry about that.

Yes it does! File > Virtual Media Manager > CD/DVD Images tab.

Not sure where the idea came from that VBox couldn't mount ISO...? It's dirt simple, really.

I'm compiling Wine right now, on the Mac.
Holy crap, it's already close to 30 minutes & still compiling!
That's longer than it takes to compile the linux kernel.
(yes, I'm well aware the Mac doesn't use the linux kernel. I used it as a reference because it was the longest compilation I had done, prior to compiling Wine)

I hope there aren't any errors, I'd hate to have to go through this process more than once.
My lap is getting hot
