OK, everyone, let's all vote. If you like you can vote anonymously by sending me a PM. So far there are two votes, mine and someone else's. I'll announce the winner as we get closer to the end of January, which is in about two weeks.
Also, there will be a choice of prizes, not necessarily a sphere. In addition to the sphere, the winner may choose a wide bracelet or a finger ring. I have three finger rings, sizes 8.5, 11, and 12.5 and the bracelet is 7.5 inches so it fits a lady's small wrist size. The finger rings are Sterling silver and the bracelet is bright aluminum with silver clasp. The size 11 finger ring is reversible and when reversed it fits a 10.5 size. Ooooo lovely chainmaille jewelry! _________________ "Let's make noise for peace." - Kijjaz

That's cool, I might write a ChucK program to do that! And from Microsoft? There's hope for them yet. _________________ "Let's make noise for peace." - Kijjaz

I should have cautioned people before viewing the video.
Not for the faint of heart.
I may have to listen to some Slayer to get this out of my system.
Good Idea. I think that much sugar coating has given me diabetes, or at least cavities! But the program's concept is great. _________________ "Let's make noise for peace." - Kijjaz
Gotta admit that was some horrible songs, though....
Reminds of this neighbor I once had, on nice summer evenings he would bring out his loudspeakers and play horrible music for the rest of the street ... I complained once, and he just said: "oh, don't you like music?" (but would turn down the volume a bit nevertheless). _________________ Jan

McCain and Obama supporters come together at last! Although, personally, it made me feel more like throwing up. I can't believe I made it through the whole thing.
Googling "Microsoft Research Computer Music" takes you to Song (ahem) smith.
Being an ex Bell Labber of 25 years, I wasn't too impressed when I interviewed at Google Labs in 2007, and apparently they weren't too impressed with me. I guess I should be pretty happy I'm out of corporate America now. Thank goodness I'm not working on crap like Songsmith. _________________ When the stream is deep

Max Mathews spent the majority of his career at Bell Labs as an engineer, conducting behavioral and acoustic research. Legend has it that in the 1950's Max Mathews would pipe the music of his late night computer noodling through the Murray Hill labs intercom system. There's no information on the effect it had on the custodial staff, but it would hardly have raised an eyebrow in the collaborative research community of the time. Mathews' music was not an "official" AT&T project -- but he was allowed free access to any equipment he wanted to use on his "socially desirable" side project.

We should perhaps remember that cheesy auto accompaniment (is there any other kind?) has been with us for several decades in the form of stand alone instruments as well as computer programs. The only new(?) thing here is that the showcased product tracks the voice for use as the 'solo instrument'.
Cheesiness to the people! It's what they want, after all...

LOL, am I the only one who saw any novelty in it? I suppose after a little over a year in music I am still a newbie! Although the video was painfully sugar coated, to see the evil empire of Microsoft do something fun and whimsical for a change was very refreshing to me. Maybe they will change their ways and give us a decent operating system next time, who knows? Just my two cents, and that's about what it's worth! _________________ "Let's make noise for peace." - Kijjaz

Enjoy!
This Songsmith thing just shows why nobody has yet voted for the "making composition easier / faster" option in the recent algorithmic composition poll.
A ready-made solution like this will always give you the same sqweezy-cheezy rubbish. Unless of course its pre-programmed repertoire is chosen by you and it can actually extract patterns and generate new ones in similar style) - like EMI.
It's been good to see so many of us developing our own quirky algorithms. We the composers doing all the work and deserving the credit - the way it should be!...

The voting is complete! There were a total of four votes, two of which were for our winner... Antimon (Stefan)! Stefan would you please post or pm with your choice of prizes, a sphere, a bracelet, or a finger ring? Thanks to everyone for competing. I just dreamed up a silly little contest on a whim one evening and it turned into a modest dash of fun and spice to our lives. Certainly everyone's participation made it interesting!
So Stefan, choose your prize! (And PM me your address).
