I do it all the time on XP and on Vista too, occasionally for one or a couple of those files I'll get "access denied" when I try, but I've never seen any harm done ... besides it wouldn't be very smart to store files that shouldn't be deleted into a folder called "temp" or any variation there off _________________ Jan

Hello!
You are mentioning Windows XP and Vista... would the same apply to Windows 2000?
Thanks!

Yes, and Windows 98, ME, 95 and DOS all had the same mechanism.
The locked ones are currently open, otherwise you can delete them.
You can also delete anything in Temporary Internet Files as well, including all those little annoying subdirectories. IE (you don't use any other browser right? ) will rebuild. - you can of course go into IE and under tools -> internet options, delete browsing history and find the delete all button. _________________ Garret: It's so retro.

Hello!
I did a search for all *.TMP files and thousands appeared. However, when trying to delete some of them I received the message that there was a "sharing violation and that most probably the file was in use"
This means that they are indeed used sometimes.
What is the best method to eliminate unused temporary files?
Thanks!

the way I use is to use a command prompt.
C:\> cd temp
C:\temp\> del /b /s /q *.*
Be very careful using the del command, and especially the /s switch, as doing this at the C:\ root directory can have particularly bad consequences.
I'd also recommend doing regular backups of your data at least. _________________ Garret: It's so retro.
