Anyone got one of the new MacBooks yet? |

Hi Guys,
Anyone got one yet?
What is it like?
I'm on the lookup for a small light laptop to run XP as my eeepc 1000 is just not up to the job, I must admit I am tempted by the MacBook and then running VMWareFusion on it.

I had a go on one in the Apple store, I spent quite a bit of time with it, but wasn't too keen on the new trackpad, I found on occasion, it was getting confused and some things were sticking to the mouse pointer, which was rather annoying, and would bugger me right up if I were performing with Ableton! However, knowing Apple, that will be sorted in a firmware update. But like all of their products, wait a while for them to iron out any problems before making the leap, especially if you're planning on playing live! |

I just upgraded my setup. New MBP and digital performer upgrade. This week I have to record the rest of a demo I am doing for a band and i will mix that soon.
I will do a review of my experience in a topic already existing on that subject:
http://electro-music.com/forum/post-214467.html&highlight=#214467
The new MBP gave me +/- 140% performance comparing to my powerbook g4 (tested in a number of cpu heavy max patches), but i think it's mostly because I added more ram memory. The macbooks are very well build, great great unibody design and react and feel very snappy and behave the way a mac should.
I love 'timemachine', this was the last time i have to spend a day moving data from one machine to the other and reorganizing my folders. I think 'leopard' was a more important upgrade than the machine. My powerbook was just fine, but it had some display problems...
More on this soon.
BTW, I love the new trackpad, the expose shortcut and the greater surface is a huge improvement! _________________ http://husc-sound.com |

It does not seem to get very hot, compared to the older mbp's. The powerbook has always been cooler.
I did have to run the firmware update a few weeks back to get rid of some genneral hickups I had. It wouldn't shut down a few times and I had a few hangs in osx. Nothing major and all seems well now!
I am doing some live performances with it now and it seems to be very well, only the ports are a joke compared to what I was used to on my powerbook.. all on one side, a fw800 and two usb is all you have. I rarely use the display out on my pb so for me having only a displayport is no issue at all. But connecting one fat usb plug leaves me with no room for another, so my usb hub will be a trusty partner.
I just upgraded my interface and it seems to all go as planned, some minor level issues, but maybe that's just me.
I am posting the first of some experiences with the new machine and upgrading dp in the earlier mentioned topic. _________________ http://husc-sound.com |

I got a 15" one for my wife for xmas. She loves it. It is much cooler running than the old Powerbook G4. She didn't need FW anyway but has not complained about the USBs which she does use. It seems to be a very nice machine, and no problems so far.
I see more USB based interfaces so new entrants might have an easier time of it. It doesn't come with enough cables, the FW800 being the worst, but at least you can migrate over the network now, which went fine at the time. _________________ Garret: It's so retro.
