I used to own a Capy and the only thing that bugged me about it eas the time between editing a sound and hearing the edit. The time the box took to compile the patch. The G2 and NM1 do this basically instantaneous as far as the user is concerned. I wonder if the increase in power of the Paca fixes this?

well, my Paca arrived today... it is a tiny, lightweight and quiet little box (a lot quieter than the Capybara was).. very very elegant. although, you hold it up in your hand. .and are like "wow, this little thing was $3000??)..

i'm using it right now with my Apogee Duet, but am having a couple of problems i'm trying to iron out. it is also a shame that the Duet does not have MIDI... so i sort of need to get a new interface for the Paca. i honestly don't use MIDI too much with Kyma (i use it to process samples).. but, still, i *do* use it sometimes.

anyone here might know the difference, in quality of convertors, between the Duet and one of the little TC Konnekt boxes? sound quality is really important and the Duet sounds amazing.. i'm a bit skeptical of the other offerings that are compatible with the Paca(rana)s right now.

any first hand experience?

thanks

ok.. an amendment to my post above..

you can use USB midi controllers connected directly to the Paca.. which is fantastic.. so it doesn't matter that my Duet doesn't have MIDI.

i have tested an m-audio 02, an evolution UC33 and a novation remote SL and they all work.

there seems to be some issues of getting external devices recognized.. i've had to do a lot of rebooting and plugging/unplugging to get these MIDI devices and my Duet working.

also, the Paca is not as quiet as i originally thought. now that it's late at night and the world is quieter, i can hear the fan quite audibly.. i'd say it's a touch quieter than the Capybara and, maybe when it's in my rack i won't hear it as much (it's right on my desk now).

other than the above, it's running great.. very elegant and powerful.. and software-wise, relatively unchanged from the last version of Kyma.. no complaints there!

Excellent! Have you tried it with any MOTU hardware by any chance? I believe Symbolic has qualified the Ultralite mk2, but I wonder if any others might just work.

hi richard

no, i don't have MOTU firewire interface..

i'm currently testing my USB controllers... the m-audio O2 seems to be very spotty.. and i'd say, at this point, it does NOT work.. (it may even be causing the hardware to crash.. and could have been the reason the Duet was not recognized right away)

oh, and once people are settled in with new systems or not.. we should think of another NY area Kyma meeting this winter/spring.. eh?

Yes, we should, definitely. I was working on a space in the city to hold it, but that fell through, and so I didn't follow up. We could still do it at my studio, and I think there'd be a lot of interest in the new hardware.

Are there any other Kyma users here on electro-music who live in the NYC area and who would be interested in a user group meeting?

i'd be open to having it at my place, too.. but your studio seems more spacious than mine, better for more people i think...

probably just a small handful of people anyway.
