Subject description: how to change patch and/or performance with just a midi controller
Reply with quote  Mark this post and the followings unread

hi all,

i'm new to that forum and new to my g2 engine.

although i'm allright with the patching, performance and patch stuff, i'd just like to know if there's a way of switching from one patch to another with a midi controller. something like a #CC ... that way i'd be able to perform without a computer.

i tried to find an answer in the forum, tried to find it in the manual... but couldn't find anything.

any tip ?
that would be greatly appreciated Smile

Try the Manual page 257 - PCsend.

This is in the manual of course but maybe the key words are unknown to you. Look for "program change" and "bank select". Program change can select another patch in the current bank and bank select (which is a CC message) selects a different bank. What is not in the manual is that when you use both bank select and program change they have to be issued in the correct order ... but I forget the actual order all the time Wink

For bank select there is an LSB selector mapped to CC32 and an MSB selector mapped to CC0. I'm not sure CC0 does anything at all, I just use CC32 on it's own.

BTW variations can be changed as well by using CC70.

Then there is this other thingie ... the G2 engine will always start up in performance mode, when you want it to run in patch mode you'll need CC19 to change the mode.

Most of this can be found at page 141 ... 154 of the manual.

The thing is what do you want to use for sending the control? Another synth?

I never used this option, but I can imagine a NoteDetect module coupled to the trigger input and to the clock input of a ControlSequencer module, in which case another Slot can be changed.

Maybe Jan can shed some light in he dark..

The (Midi) PCSend module has no other Midi channel options then 1 - 16 and this; no Slot A - D available.

I think you answered the right question, however, is there a way to do it inside the Engine itself?
In other words, to send a Midi command to another Slot to change itself? Of course it will silence the synth for a while, but it might work...

Not internally (as you said the PC send module can't send on an internal MIDI bus), but it could be done I guess by connecting the MIDI in and out ... I never tried but simply used another engine instead Wink

thx a lot !

you actually answered to my question.

what i need is to use program change to change my patch in one slot (i will start with this, then think more widely for performance mode.)

sounds like a max:msp patch to control the thingie !... damn, i'd like to get rid of the laptop.

Don't know too much about MIDI controllers, but sending some CCs and a PC doesn't seem to odd a requirement for such devices to me, do you already have some controller, or something in mind?

Yes -- if you send a MIDI bank select signal on a given channel number, it will load a patch into the slot associated with that channel.

Look at pages 142-143 of the manual.
