@ootini:
very nice work!! I like that LEGO like case and I'm impressed about that
sound sample, sounds
If you can select more than 4 synths (5..Cool then you have the newest hex file. Synths 5..8 are not implemented yet.
Why learn C and roll your own? I recommend buying a cheap pic-programmer. Or the WinPIC800 (can prgram AVR and PIC)
If I get my prototype back, then I make a version for the C18 C-Compiler which is free.

Synths 1..4 should work,
synth 3 (step sequencer) : turn pot4, pitch for each step has to be fetched.

Hey ho. I want to add a power supply connection to my picsynth. I have a couple of 9v effects pedal adapters, so I could use them without having to fuck with the existing pic synth power supply. Basically solder the connection thing in place of the 9v battery clip.

Only thing is, I don’t know what the little thing is called so I can order it. what are those little things called?

They are called power jacks. Sometimes called barrel jacks. An example would be Digi-Key (digikey.com) part number CP-055D-ND, manufactured by CUI. Be sure to check the inside and outside diameters to match your parts.

Hi all,

I have been watching this forum for some time but this is my first time
posting. It's my first time having something to show too Smile

I made the fraktal Synth and put it in a shoebox (hence the title). I have
some samples too.

Posted Image, might have been reduced in size. Click Image to view fullscreen.

My next move will be to pass it through MC 909 and actually use it to make
a tune.

for now, the only sample I have made is here:

http://sites.google.com/site/diysynth/Home/CatweazlesFractalSynth.mp3

for more photos you can go to http://synth-diy.blogspot.com/2008/10/shoebox-fractalsynth.html

photos also here: http://picasaweb.google.com/akorbeti/DiySynth

My daughter whined a bit for taking her box but I just gave it some added
value.. It is still hers. I only play with it when she's asleep. She likes to
play with it! It's so easy! No rules Smile

I might consider making one for giving it as a present to our neighbour's
little boy.!! It's a wonderful idea (well, for children only Smile )

Thank you Catweazle!!!

I agree! That sample covers a lot of ground. I put up some cad pictures & a photo of my recently-completed fraktal synth. I added a one-watt amplifier and power switch. Now I have to practice playing it and see what it can do.

Just wondering, with your Eagle .BRD files. Who are you using as your PCB house to process those files. I know that "PCB Pool" works with them but doing a quote with them did not beat EXPRESS PCB at all. Can you recommend any good, cheaper, PCB services that are compatible with the .BRD files?

Thanks and nice work on your end also sir. Very Happy

I haven't used any services that take Eagle files directly. However, Eagle produces nice Gerber artwork and Excellon drill files, and I have sent these through BatchPCB (found on Sparkfun's site). I got very nice boards back from them, double-sided, silkscreened, solder-masked and plated through. Most PC board vendors can read these files.

For single-sided art, we plot quarter-panels full of PC boards onto clear film and send this film to Electronic Industries. (http://electronicindustries.net/. They charge about $125 for a 17" x 23" panel of PC boards. These are single-sided and drilled, sheared to size. No solder mask, no silkscreen. The company I work for sends in about a dozen of these per month, so I just snuck the fraktal synth on one of these orders. I have to convert to Auto-Cad to get it into our plot queue. This step is kind of labor-intensive and redundant. I use Eagle's DXF ulp, then tweak it by hand in AutoCad. If you want the Auto-Cad file for the fraktal synth, you can have it.

Hi there again,

I just made a new shell for the fraktalSynth I posted about above.
The name still remains babyBotte because I liked it so much.
Its shelter now is an IKEA container which I processed accordingly.
The panel was made on photographic paper and was stuck on the lid.
The knob's background is color coded . Green for function, yellow
shades for parameters, red for output (volume/filter). The main
pushbutton is the top right so while pressing this with your left
thumb, you can use the same thumb to press another key.

Posted Image, might have been reduced in size. Click Image to view fullscreen.

and a small description at http://synth-diy.blogspot.com/2008/11/babybotte-repackaged.html

For more shots there is always the pool.
http://picasaweb.google.gr/akorbeti/DiySynth#

(BTW Should I move to flickr?)

Now it is VERY easy to play with it because it has a very solid
feeling. I might make a video sometime..

Thanks again for the synth catweazle..

Hello peoples

I added a plucked-string preset to the fraktal synth. Still having fun with this one. Code and sample at http://www.reprolabs.com/fs7.htm.

Hi folks -

Any recommendation on what programmer to use to burn this chip? Or, alternately, anyone willing to burn one for me?

Thanks,
Patrick

will do the trick for ya.

Really? It doesn't say it supports the 18F4620 - are any mods/updates required to make it work?

Patrick

I've been using an old Microchip Picstart Plus to program the chip. I think there is a lot more this chip can do - this code only uses 4% of the program area. Catweazle's code makes it easy to add more modules. I'd like to add a third control knob function to the plucked strings so that the other two knobs control pitch in more interesting sequences.

I have also been looking through my old copy of Hal Chamberlin's "Musical Applications of Microprocessors" for ideas. Hmmmmm...

First of all happy new year everyone !
I'm impressed about the news going on here. New Algorithm and so on Wink

Maybe it's a bit off-topic but I have some news ...

A Nintendo DS Version of the PIC Fraktal Synth
- in a very very basic alpha state but it makes some noise -

Only one Algorithm (the first one) with 2 Parameters controlled by the
touchscreen. Cool

You need a a flash-card (I use R4DS) and of course a NintendoDS ...

but runs in the No$GBA Emulator too

FraktalSynth_alpha.zip

Sure, PM me .... I just updated my Promate II programmer with the latest firmware so it's good to go to program the 18F4620. Cool I believe the latest Picsynth firmware is at a Ver 1.1 ?? Not sure. PM me with the latest PS "HEX" file and we will work the on the arrangements offline ....

Thanks guys. Wonderful project and I just love the sounds... I didn't even need to hear it. I was caught allready by this line:

My neighbor came downstairs to see if something was wrong with the washing machine.
