Another issue is having actual keys there.. not just a keyboard controller or two. I miss having all these great surfaces there.. all over the place
Hmmm.. since most new digital synths could be called computers with an instrument interface.. i guess virtual and analog gear has kinda fused. i have no problem with that. main point is that it dies the job and well. |

Well, there are two things: user interface, and the computational capability. It's up to the individual to asses the state-of-the-art vs. one's requirements.
For live performance, I personally need more capability than any single or dual processor general purpose CPU. Also, I've yet to see a computer program that can do what a Kyma system can, or emulate an analog synthesizer like a Nord Modular, or make beautiful keyboard sounds like a Kurzweil.
As for the user interface, I'm still waiting for the midi controller of my dreams. |

Perhaps we should go for that "black helicopter" thingie instead? But.. instead of going "take me to your leader!" we could do "bring me all your gear!" ???
x-files is a nono.. we are now in for the gear-files...

Interesting topic.
I recently acquired an Emu XL-7 Command Station and have been having a lot of fun learning my way around it. It will probably stay in my setup for a long time for its sequencing, internal synth, and MIDI capabilities.
I also have a Nord Micromodular for audio processing and experimental noises.
To complement these, I was planning to use a G2. However I decided to go in a different direction - get a Windows laptop and run Ableton Live on it. One reason is I want to work with audio clips. The other is an interest in microtuning and there are lots of microtunable VST synths for Windows, that will load tuning files in the popular .scl and .tun formats. I plan to look at LinPlug's CronoX and Albino and z3ta+.
As far as I know, there isn't anything like Live in hardware. So that's one point in favor of software. Also there are very few hardware synths left that have decent microtuning capability. The XL-7 is one of them. Unfortunately, Clavia's synths are not.
In my musical future, I think there will always be a potential place for hardware, but most likely in the form of audio processors such as the Frostwave pedals and delay units such as the Line6DL4 and the upcoming Electro-Harmonix EH16 Reissue.

MusicalGirevik, sounds like a great setup you've got. There is talk, nothing official, that Clavia will make micro-tuning modules for the G2 in due time.
Interesting about your interest in Abelton Live. I'm kinda interested in that to. I've got so much happening, that I don't have time to get into any new music software though. |

Hi Mosc,
I realized that I have no place for the G2 (which I bought on impulse) in what I do musically right now and can't think of a role for it. Meanwhile I have a couple of local friends who are Nord Modular experts - who are just dying to get their hands on a G2 and are eminently capable making some magic on one right now. So I feel pretty good about selling it to one of them. It's kinda like having a nice guitar and a friend who happens to be Jimi Hendrix but needs a guitar.
I'm not totally ruling out getting another G2 in the future - but I need to keep my GAS under control and identify a concrete need for it in my own musical activities before I buy it again.
Another major factor in going towards the laptop/Live solution was watching Squarepusher's amazing show last week. I'd seen lots of laptop musicians before, but it was the first time I'd seen one perform music with a laptop with such tight and complex arrangments and at breakneck speed too yet also be able to switch into improvised Merzbow-like noise at the drop of a hat. He played both his laptop and his bass like real musical instruments. Quite a revelation to me.
I finally recorded my first 19-tone ET sequence pattern in my XL-7. I hope to start recording audio from my XL-7 experiments sometime this week, with my currently rudimentary recording setup (M-Audio Firewire 410, Ableton Live Delta - the version that comes free with the Firewire 410). |
