A friend just told me about a great program for Windows - ABox by Andyware.

http://www.andyware.com/index.html

arrow It is free.

It's sorta in the vein of a soft modular synth, but a deep connection to the digital world. It uses a graphical programming interface similar to some other programs, like SynthMaker and SynthEdit, but it has it's own look and feel. Each module has a lot of parameters that can be entered in a text form, similar to Kyma.

Don't expect the interface to be immediately intuitive, like the Nord Modulars, but it seems to some advantages.

Apparently, Andy has a strong interest in making self playing patches which he calls Jambots - most people on electro-music.com call them noodles. In any case, he has published a bunch of his Jambots on his site. They are excellent noodles. Highly recommended.

I'd be interested if anyone has any experience with ABox and would like to make some comments.

Just DL'd and toyed with it a bit, looks like nice software to me ... just set up a couple of oscillators modulating each other ... seems to work pretty nice.

Some of the those noodles are pretty good indeed, it sounds like a fine synth too.

welcome to the forum.

What other modular soft-synths have you had a look at?

thanks BobTheDog Smile

i am slowly learning MAX/MSP at uni - just got myself a student license so i can continue at home (many, many hours needed for that one!). i'm very impressed with karmafx modular (just played with the demo) although it doesn't offer the control something like MAX gives you and i also have bidule. i bought a license for bidule about 2 years ago after a friend recommended it and i have barely used it since! mainly due to time constraints i might add but i intend to fully immerse myself in it for the purpose of the dissertation.

MAX/MSP I must admit is difficult for me to learn, fun though.

Bidule I like.

KarmaFX is a new one on me I must admit, looks interesting. Doesn't seem to have a Mac version though.

Also worth a look are Reaktor (they do a demo version), and the Nord Modular G2 Demo a monophonic version of the G2 to run on your pc, this can be found at http://www.clavia.se/main.asp?tm=oldproducts&clpm=Nord_Modular_G2&clnlm=Downloads bottom right of the page.

Reaktor is something i plan to purchase at some point. i have played around with it at uni (we have a copy on every mac yet there is not one assignment/module that requires it to be used!! a complete waste of resources...) and been suitably impressed. to be honest if i owned that i don't think i would need anything else! the possibilities are pretty much limitless as far as i can tell. Abox looks like good fun although i'm not sure if i have time to learn it before writing the paper. MAX is going to take long enough!

i had a look at the nord modular. i'm not sure if it is vista compatible though so i haven't tried installing it yet. are there restrictions with the fact that it is a demo or is it a fully functioning piece of kit passed on as freeware (as it is discontinued)?

The Nord Modular demo, is exactly that- a demo, and you can't control it via MIDI. But it is a working virtual demo, albeit monophonic. It is free.

The actual Nord Modular is hardware based, and relies on a free editor download to make it work. However, the editor is nothing more than an editor. ie it makes/ outputs no sound.

thanks Blue Hell Smile i will install it and have a play around with it later. seems odd that nord should still allow a demo of a discontinued product to be downloaded

Yes that is correct, and I meant the demo to be the only modular they currently have ...

I just had a quick look at this and I see it has an operator for differentiating and one that will solve six simultaneous differential equations. Shocked

Does anyone know of other softsynths that will do this kind of operation?

Very Happy

Many do differentiation, but I've not seen diff eqs.

Thanks, Howard. What are some of the ones that do differentiation? Just looking at their websites it's hard to figure out what all they do.

Well, isn't differentiation just a delay and a subtract operator?

Sure -- to lowest order. I'm not that familiar with the numerical methods the softsynths use (can you tell Laughing ). But surely a decent math package would use a more sophisticated method. I should play around with these some to see how well your idea works. If it works well, then maybe an RK solver for diffeqns could be written.

So I downloaded the abox software and learned about the diff eqn solver a bit. I actually got it to produce a sine wave! Andy has several chaotic systems in his examples, so I shouldn't have much trouble setting up the things I'm interested in.

Thanks for flagging us on this great software Mosc!

Very Happy

Is there any way to attach an ABox file here? I get an illegal extention error.
