Would "cross variation" parameter editing be useful?
Yes, it's essential.

No, it would be confusing or hard to use.

The Variation feature on the G2 is very nice, but at times it can be cumbersome.

In particular, if the variations feature is being used to hold different sections of a sequenced or noodle piece, or even if it is used for variations of a single keyboard sound, there are times when the user needs to edit a single parameter in all variations.

For example, suppose the user has created a drum sequencer patch, in which each variation contains a different set of drum patterns. If the user decides to change the tuning of the kick drum, he has to change it independently in all 8 variations. Or if a new module is added to a patch with multiple variations, that module's settings need to be adjusted in each variation.

The solution to this would be to allow any parameter to be marked internally as applying to all variations. When this flag is set, changing the parameter in the current variation (either through the editor or from an assignable control) would also cause it to change in other variations as well. From a UI perspective, this would probably have to be hidden in a right-click menu, rather than on the module itself. An additional function key could be used to show all of the marked parameters using tooltiops, similar to the way the F5 through F8 keys currently work.

The variations is indeed a concept that needs to crystallize out some more.

Last year I've seen a beta version where one had the option to change knobs in all variations. This was not knob based but global to all knobs.
It was hell, when one forgot to deactive the function and tweaked a knob that had different settings in different variations these would all get this one new value and it was virtually impossible to get the other knobs back to like they were.

Basically one would want to be able to 'lock' and 'unlock' knobs in the variations themselves, as there is always that one variation where you don't want the value to change along (you can trust me in this). Like this filter cutoff knob that is locked in variations 1, 2, 5 and 6 and freely tweakable in variations 3, 4, 7 and 8. Which would have to be marked in the patch file. I vaguely remember the mentioning of some practical issues for its implementation, so Clavia made the Ctrl-E [Paste params] function instead.

The Ctrl-E function works quite well, select some modules and do Ctrl-C for copy. Then press the variation button on the panel or on the ascii keyboard (the number knobs) or click a variation in the editor to go to the variation. Then press Ctrl-E and voilĂ ...

For me personally using the Ctrl-E works sufficiently well, in any case its much less accident prone.

Yeah, the variation system is good idea but needs to be worked on.

However, for one side of this problem, I have figured out a partial solution - hardly ideal, but it's useful all the same.

I like to be able to have certain knobs independent of the variations, so I can move from variation to variation while sending controller data from an external source (I'm using the Engine so I don't use G2 knobs) and not have those knobs jump at each change.

Say the patch in question is in Slot A and I want the Filter cutoff independent of variation change. What I do is assign the knob a certain CC, say #25, then move to another slot (say Slot D). I pull down a MIDI Controller Send module, a Constant Value module, and an Oscillator module (any one will do). I set the MIDI Contoller Send module channel to Slot A and the number to #25 (ie the Filter cutoff). Then I cable the Constant Value output to the Controller Send control input and the Oscillator output to the Controller Send logic up input.

This means that the Slot A Filter cutoff will be controlled by the Slot D Constant Value knob, with the data being sent virtually continuously, because of the triggering effect of the oscillator. So when different variations are selected in Slot A, the Oscillator will virtually instantly reset the filter cutoff to the Constant knob level. In effect the cutoff level remains independent of variation selection.

Of course this means that if you want the have the effect of altering the knob value across all variations and do so in the editor, you will need to change slots. It also means that the Slot from which you send the controller data will have to remain variation free. There may also be issues regarding the MIDI channels of the different slots. It's a bit messy, but it does what I need it to do.
