After chatting to Les, in particular, in the chat room, I've decided to follow a path and see where it leads me.

It involves using this rather nice IC: ADAU1761

I ordered some samples and a breakout board for the particularly fiddy package. (LFCSP32)

I shall solder it in the next few days and power it up!

The IC is a codec (ADC + DAC) that has a built in DSP Core. It may well be the DSP core does not suit our purpose, but there is another IC, ADAU1361, that is the same but without the DSP core, so we could conceivably use an external DSP processor that is more open to hobbyists, like dsPICs.

Macaba (Mark), thank you so much for jumping in on the eChucK project! You have a lot of great ideas that we can mull about to see what works for the project.

I also like your idea of securing the boards into a sculpture with non-electrical solid wire and then using stranded wire for the electrical signals. That way a sculpture can be rewired as desired without falling apart.

It's good as well that you're on board (pun intended) with the Lunetta board and including your processor on it, plus you have access to a shear and plan to do hotplate SMT fab, all great resources for the project. Plus other stuff I don't recall at the moment.

Let's use this thread as a way to record your thoughts so they don't get lost in a puff of smoke like so many great ideas. Best to ya!

Les

I soldered the IC onto the protoboard:

slow but steady progress....

here I've soldered the decoupling caps and the ground wires.

Unfortunately I've just moved house and left my nice flexible hookup wire somewhere else, so it'll be a few days before I can wire this upto a micro and make some sine waves!

Nice progress, Mark, more than I can say for myself at the moment. I'm busy unpacking from the move. Then comes guitar surgery and finally I get back to eChucK. Will be working on the lunetta board for sure.

Les
