a big thank you from me to everyone who played or helped out on the streams and to Shane for organising it.

It was a fun night Smile

When shall we do the next one?

Here's mine:

http://www.otownmedia.com/Lainhart_SummerSolstice09.mp3

This is an edit of the full hour - I'm saddened that my technical problems impaired my performance, and I've cut out the problem sections. I was using a beta version of Rax3 to host my plugins and route audio to and from Kyma, and Rax flaked out on me during the performance, resetting preset levels and actually disabling audio inputs at one point. I had everything running perfectly earlier during the day, so I thought I'd be safe, in spite of certain ominous problems I'd had earlier. I should have known.

I learned a valuable lesson, though - I'm never going to use beta software live again.

At any rate, thanks to electro-music for organizing and hosting the concert, to Shane and Jan for their technical support, and to all the artists for their wonderful performances.

I too had a great time playing and very much appreciate all the work done to pull this off. I'll post a link to my set once I have it uploaded.

Here's a link to my set. It can be posted to the archives.
http://users.chartertn.net/getpix/SummerSolstice_09_Mahoney.mp3

Unable to post download here. The site tells me I can only upload 20 megs, and this file is about 26-26 megs. How are the other posters able to get their files loaded?

And here's mine.

They never go how I think they will. Performances, even solo, have a life of their own. The thunderstorm unexpectedly stopped for no reason I can find, and some other small niggles, but that's what playing live is all about.

The best thing to do with recordings would be to upload them here into this thread as file attachments. That way the files could also be played from the radio archive stream (instead of the AHNE-jam forever Wink ), which would otherwise not be possible. For this to work people should upload their own recording asa file attachment to a post here (like the one above by EdisonRex), as it will then be linked to the person in the right way. Not all people will have sufficient disk quota for this, but when uploads fail please let me know - I'll fix the quota then.

For those who did not record themselves, most material has been recorded from the streams and those recordings are available through http://bluehell.electro-music.com/ss09/ - click the schedule link, and then the appropriate speaker symbol. Not all tracks are present yet, we're still working on those (only thing that was not recorded was the plastixman intro, I forgot to hit the button there).

I too would like to thank all the artists, all the operators, and all the listeners for making yesterday's performance a genuine treat from start to finish.

On behalf of the gang at stillstream.com and especially my fellow DJs Allen Goodman, David Herpich, and Darrell Burgan, I would also like to thank Howard, Jan, Bill, Shane, and everyone else from electro-music who helped us along in our simulcast, providing excellent communication and making the whole broadcast run smoothly.

As for my performance, it was my intent all along not to save it, and I did not record it myself. If anyone else did, I'd appreciate it if he or she contacted me before doing anything with the audio.

Many thanks... I hope to see everyone at another event like this one in the future (shall we aim for the Winter Solstice?)... and I hope to see some of you over in Stillstream's chat some evening, we'd be happy to have you!

And speaking of which, my show starts in 20 minutes. Time to go get ready...

mike

And from me a big thank you to the EM peeps for bringing yet another epic festival. I've missed about 4 hours of it all and have enjoyed myself quite much both with the stream as well as in the chatrooms.

I'm quite happy with how my own performance turned out since beforehand I just didn't feel it.

I've recorded it myself at CD quality which will later this year become available in a tryptich release called TR on my netlabel Just not Normal. I've no problem it being available for your listening pleasure at Jan's page.

Thank you all once again, and I'll likely see you again on the winter-festival (or sooner or later)

Thanks everyone for a great festival. Had a lot of fun!

One comment. The download page at:

http://bluehell.electro-music.com/ss09/info_ss09.php

This page has no copyright notice or license information at all. The public thus could consider the material public domain, which is not accurate, at least for my own set anyway. So this page either needs to say "all music is copyrighted by the individual artists" or have a Creative Commons license statement, or something that protects the rights of all the artists.

Also, in the future, it would be helpful if it was clear up front that our live sets were going to be recorded and posted for free download. I wasn't aware this was going to be done and would have appreciated being asked first. I'm okay with my set being listed there at 128k resolution but I'm just saying .... Smile

Are you sure your browser hung? Uploading huge files takes quite some time. My Ephemera shows take 1/2 hour to upload. Ergo, for me, 1/2 hour upload was around 7.5 minutes. I have 768k upload though. YMMV.

I think I waited at least 10 minutes, and I have ok upload bandwidth (uploading the mp3 to my web page, which is on a server at my old university, only took some 10 seconds.) I'll make another attempt.

Thanks for making this such a rewarding event, gang. It was a humbling experience to be surrounded and welcomed by so many great musicians!

I had a great time, and look forward to future electro-music streaming events.

Now, as to the MP3 archive that's gone up since the concert:

dburgan wrote:

Agreed. In addition, I think we need to consider the legal point that obtaining permission to broadcast a musical performance is a separate rights-licensing issue from obtaining permission to freely distribute a downloadable reproduction ("transferable" and "on demand") of it.

For further information on the legal issues, here are a couple links:
http://www.collegebroadcasters.org/podcast.shtml
http://wiki.creativecommons.org/Podcasting_Legal_Guide

Thus, posting an MP3 copy of anyone's broadcast performance without first seeking their explicit permission (or alternately obtaining a blanket license or waiver which covers all of their works) is technically illegal. The performer's agreement to be part of the initial live-broadcast stream doesn't actually mitigate that detail.

The safest way to navigate this situation next time is probably just to ask permission from each performer *before* posting recordings. But by the time late Sunday night that I learned there was an archive of concert recordings, my music was already available for free download without my consent. It was a little frustrating, to be honest.

In the end, I may very well decide to release most or all of my performance somewhere down the road on a Creative Commons net-label album, but I'd still like to be the one deciding how and when the material is eventually disseminated online, and in what form or context.

So, while I hope that I'm not clumsily ruffling the feathers of any of the numerous wonderful people who worked so hard put this event together, I'd really like to see my set removed from the archive.

Anyway, sorry for feeling the need to get all serious about the details, and thanks again to absolutely everyone involved for providing such a great concert opportunity! Very Happy

Thanks for all the advice - they are points that we've been discussing internally as well. I've made sure my archives are posted as CC licensed, copyrighted, and some rights reserved. And I think each musician should make a point of reading up on Creative Commons, at the very least.

I'd also like to again thank the Stillstream posse for all the help, constructive comments, and music. I hope that the collaboration continues.

I'm sorry I missed Mike Metlay's performance (it was at 4:30 in the morning for me), and it's too bad there is no archive; my loss.

Pending the discussion I've removed all downloads.

In the past we have been handling the publications of recorded streams in an informal way, and one of the reasons I asked people to upload their own music was precisely the copyright issue that has been touched here. The page I made was not meant meant to be a public service or an official archive of recordings, but rather as a service for people to be able to re-listen their own set, but this was a bad idea and I apologize for having done this.

Still I did not delete the tracks and will provide people their own music on request, just for those we were not able or willing to record their own set.

Hope this settles it.

Still I might want to make some sort of an overview site with links to the music ... not sure though how this is done best now ... maybe just a couple of links in the first post of this thread ... it seems a bit of a chore to wade through this thread to find the listens. Suggestions are welcome.

edit : we do of course have : http://electro-music.com/mp3media.php?forums=174

That works for me for this one. Maybe in the future we want to set up a recordings page similar to the photos super-pages we set of for physical events like EM2008. (Which, by the way is giving me a database error when I try to access it just now.) Then artists can post their sessions along with copyright notices in a central place within a short time after performance.

Always something learned for next time. Thanks, Jan and everyone.

One easy solution might just be to ask for a show of hands of people who don't mind having their sets posted back on your site.

Once someone has given you permission to post their performance, all is well legally, so there's nothing further to worry about in that regard.

You could even use the same archive page, but only add recordings if the artsists request it -- as I think most of them will, judging by the number of people offering their own recordings for download.

Also, you already have recordings of all the sets at your disposal, so you could simply add back recordings to the schedule page as permissions are granted.

That's a potential approach, at any rate.
