and, now for a cheeky request, for any musicians attending, would you be willing to help out with gear for people flying to em 2009

I am... But I don't know what to bring. I don't expect to have enough to put together a performance so I am going minimal and even that is not decided yet.

I've been thinking about what to bring for a while and have currently settled on: Nord G2, Repeater, SP-404 and Evolver with mixer & effects, hopefully the G2 could be taken on as hand luggage and the rest can go in a sturdy suitcase with my other luggage

I'm going as well.

I would love to take a guitar, axon midi converter, VG99, rmc fanout box, Pacarana and Laptop. Not sure I will be able to though. Maybe just the laptop and pacarana.

You may borrow one of my banjos

I travel pretty lightly, laptop, Live, Max/MSP, a mic and some DIY software. You're welcome to use them. (I loaned a laptop for an evening last year.)

There is usually some G2 borrowing going on.

Typically at least 3 theremins on hand!

I'm going for sure.

I'll be stationed at the ChucK domonstration table with my eMac, my netbook, and my guitar invention. I was just playing the guitar today and had a great time. Plus I have a cable that will route ChucK into the guitar amp so that it blasts out loud. I will also bring my 6GB of ChucK files for anyone who wants them and has a memory stick.

I've never been before but looking forward to it.

Just got a little info from the chat room ... sounds like the open jams are arranged with themes.

Wondering who comes up with the themes?

Also, do I need to sign on as a performer to participate in the open jams or can I just bring my gear and play?

Collective experience, I imagine. Count on a space jam, noise jam, ambient jam, analog jam, impromptu jam, drum circle, acoustic jams, processed acoustic jams, and probably anything else you can think of. There are usually time slots to add some.

Just bring your gear and play

Anyone who wants to schedule a particular type of jam can contact us at event@electro-music.com

Otherwise, they're pretty much open.
You don't have to be a performer to participate in the jams.

In the preliminary schedule, we've set aside some time each morning for a drum circle/acoustic jam. Also some collaborative performances after midnight, which are improvisational sessions by that day's performers, and maybe some other invitees.

Last year we had the following themes for the jams:
space music
electro-acoustic
melodic ambient
analog madness
laptop battle
DIY instruments
noise
drum circle
acoustic
berlin school
abstract
free improv
rhythmic jam

Some times people with common interests gathered for those. Most of the time whoever was there played whatever they wanted. The number of people playing at any given session varied from zero to more than a dozen.

There are some clips of the jam sessions on the highlights video.

It would be a good idea to set time limits for each genre of jam, say 45 minutes.
Only to keep aligned and to have something to follow.
If X jam gets a really good vibe maybe continue to fill one hour.
just an idea.
Jams can get mushy and out of sync without some sort of theme or direction.

I'm already booked for all 3 days, by golly!

I'm planning to bring both my live show full synth setup as well as a portable (battery-powered) compact laptop/controller/keyboard/amp rig for those spontaneous top of the hill, middle of the woods, or end of the dock jams that I'm sure will happen! I think this "band camp" experience will see a LOT more strange-location performances than at past EM events... as long as the weather holds out!

Naturally
Have not missed one .
I'm open for jams, recording,or any electroexperimentaleccentricities
- deviating from conventional or accepted usage or conduct especially in odd or whimsical ways.....
Also will be performing once again with Fringe Element.

The important question: Will you be wearing your VU meter Tshirt? I found some for sale here in Vegas (on a computer professor conference trip), haven't bought one, but am tempted!

One of those T-shirts was sported by Mark Jenkins during his EM06 performance.

Do you have to sign up for them, and is there a limit on people? And if 10 people show up with a synth, does the 11th one have to have a different instrument? (I recall a folk jam where I wandered in and they groaned 'not another guitar!" at which point I tried to acquire small acoustic instruments besides guitars.)

So should I bring a guitar as well as my cheap-ass Yamaha MM6?

Another question... I wonder if people will be doing any trading.

I do have a nature sounds CD of crickets & cicadas that I once made.
Code:
http://www.geocities.com/shadow42.geo/insect-summer.html

Also I could bring a few of my signature patented LED lamps that I make from crystal Lite containers. I could trade these items for music......or something?

You don't have to sign up for the jams. You can bring any instrument you want - it's up to you to make it work with the music that's happening. As you can imagine, this makes things fairly unpredictable, but we like it that way!

The room is rather small this year, it might feel a bit crowded if there are more than 12 people or so (depending on how much gear they have). I guess this will naturally limit the size. In the past, some just left their gear set up in the jam room. This year that won't be possible because of the size of the room, and also we will be using the room for seminars in the afternoons. There are a couple of other spaces available for jams if there is enough demand, but at this point we're not planning to set up PA systems in them.

There will certainly be people who want to buy, sell, or trade equipment. We might even set up a special area for this. And all participants are invited to bring their CDs or other merchandise for sale.
