Hi! Back in '05 I created a Nature sounds CD "Insect Summer of Love" (http://www.geocities.com/shadow42.geo/insect-summer.html). People request it a lot and I have been thinking of making it available for free download. I'd like to be able to give something back to all the great folks here who have shared their albums.

I don't know too much about this aspect of the web. Can anyone recommend the best site for providing free downloads?

Laura

Laura, although I am not overly aware of the available sites, ocp has a netlabel for distributing albums of songs. Shane and I have both released music through him. You could pm ocp and ask him about his netlabel perhaps?

I see some people are using VIRB, does anyone know about that?
I want something that is easy to use for me and the downloader, and doesn't have a lot of spam associated with it.

VIRB is good, i have a page there. There is a somewhat tight restriction on how much music you can post though. I think you can post one album's worth probably.

I use these

www.archive.org/details/audio

is good for creative commons stuff and is a bit fiddly

www.rapidshare.com

is good for big files and is simple to use, but has some restrictions if you don't have an account

I don't use these, but they look interesting

www.4shared.com

http://bandcamp.com/

bandcamp is good - very clean, no ads or other junk, easy to use.

It's very impressive!!! What's the catch?
Is it just for commercial-type bands?

I've looked into Bandcamp, whilst it's free at the moment, they reserve the right to charge for stuff later on

and most annoyingly you have to upload as FLAC, which means significantly bigger files and consequently, longer upload times

and also a bit of a pain, they have a max track length of around 25 minutes

without a doubt http://archive.org is the best site to put an independent album.

It has a bunch of independent net-labels. Everything is Creative-Commons Licensed.

As for promoting your music:
myspace
last.fm

I know myspace is horrible, but it's a very good way to promote music, I've met interesting people and got gigs from there.

hope it helps

It looks great! Last time I looked at it it was all in French. But this time I could read it.

I've just signed up to Bandcamp. Despite already being on MySpace and Virb to whore my tunes, and Soundcloud to share files, it seemed the best option to host the finished product.

I'm not sure if they've changed things recently, but apparently they only charge in terms of taking a cut of any money you make from paid-for downloads - if you're happy for people to download your tracks for free then Bandcamp charge nothing.

It's now possible to upload in 16-bit wav and aif formats, but the max track length still exists.

There's this smaller site I know from a friend in France called, 'Fairtillizer (http://www.fairtillizer.com)' that I tried out a while ago to post some DJ mixes, and it's really nice!
It has a neat intimate feeling opposed to the more broad/out-in-the-dessert like feeling of some music uploading sites.
Definitely gets an A+ in my book; you can set your songs anywhere from password protected, so that only people with the password can take a listen, or set them as free and downloadable, as well as post the tracks in their custom player in any sort of website/blog/forum.
Just my two cents~

Just curious. A question to those that answered this question. Why not use electro-music.com? What would it take to make electro-music.com a viable solution for you?

Honest answer - I didn't know it was any sort of solution, let alone a viable one.

Some assumptions that led me to this:

I thought that the Artist sub-forum was for the more established/senior/involved members of the site.

The Online Music sub-forum implies that people linking to their music elsewhere is the preferred method.

I believed electro-music.com was run and funded voluntarily so therefore hosting (potentially) vast numbers of tracks would be a considerable and unwelcome financial burden (in terms of server space if nothing else).

Please feel free to tell me that some/all of these assumptions are incorrect.

- I guess adding a section in the front page with a list of net-albums that are available for free download under a Creative Commons License. Different from Media and Store.

- People aren't aware of the process for uploading their net-albums or how does it work.

Currently people can upload mp3s and there is a presentation interface here (accessible through the media link in the top menu bar on all forum pages) - please note the "Show media in these forums:" option in the top right (that page has some more filtering options although not visible in the user interface).

Everyone has a limit on uploads of 20 MB (files can be attached to forum posts, the individual file size limit currently is 200 MB or so), but on request that limit can be set higher. A couple of people have uploaded nearly 2 GB, However there would be no room for everyone here to upload that much. We're looking into solutions for potential disk space problems though.

Then there are the artists forums, on request such a forum can be made for any member here, just send a message to Howard or to me.

As to the rights on upladed music, everyone posting attachments can decide on a license for themselves and tell about it in the post and/or the file comment - obviously on uplaoding a non exclusive right will be given to electro-music for distributing that upload.

I'm sure Howard would have to say more about this, but this is what came to mind on reading the above posts.

You can contact archive.org and request to register electro-music as a net-label. Unlimited bandwidth and storage. Just a suggestion of course.

I've been thinking about this for some time actually. But we added the "Radio Program Archives" to the media section...which slowed down my initiative on this topic.
However, I love netreleases cause you get the whole package and usually at higher quality. em netlabel is something to consider

But back to the original topic... Soundcloud is a really great site for hosting large amounts of high quality digital downloads. Im just getting started with them and dig it.

i would very much like to use electro-music.com for 'publishing' my music.

listeners could be reminded to donate to e-m if they like what they got.

best regards

I agree with shanemorris about Soundcloud (http://www.soundcloud.com)
It's a simple, clean, easy to use site for posting/listening to music files.
