I'm working on a violin and computer piece and I want to use a footswitch or several footswitches to let the violinist control pacing in some sections. I have one that plugs into a midi controller and it works fine, but I don't want to force the performer to have a midi keyboard onstage just for that. Something that just plugs into a usb socket would be better.

Is this really the easiest thing there is? I'm not good with hardware Embarassed and I'd be willing to spend a little more to spare myself the inevitable f***-ups with the cutting metal and soldering in those directions.

Thanks.

I realize this is an old post but if the poster is still around, how are you getting midi information to the computer today? Is the keyboard attached to the PC's USB port? If that's the case, it might make more sense to get a small midi interface to connect the footswitches to the PC, rather than inventing something from scratch.

if you wanted a really rough and ready foot switch device, could you rip off most of the the keys from a usb keyboard and use that? i think i saw something similar on CreateDigitalMusic..

Here is a forum post on how to build a footswitch. You could use any keypad. FWIW this particular keypad can be ordered with a MIDI cable (Genovation MiniTerm 900-MIDI).

http://www.genovation.com/forum/topic-2113.html

Please note that I work for Genovation. If you have any tech questions regarding this or related projects I would happily answer them. I hope we can all work together to make some great gear (homebrew or pro) and some great music.

If you search for USB + keyboard + encoder you will find quite a few options, but it will probably be more expensive than just trashing one you already have.
