How hard is it to work in your home studio when your next door neighbors are having a party and blasting crappy top 40 shite on their deck?

It makes me want to blast some squarepusher out the windows at them...

Now it sounds just like one of those teen-drama theme songs.

Remembers me of the garden party here, a month ago or so, there were a couple of "young Eric Claptons" there ... must say though that when they got a bit drunk it wasn't actually too bad what they played. Top 40 seems way worse ...

Mebbe that's what I should've done instead of moving because of all the noisy parties (record week. three ruined working days due to landlords drunken guitar ramblings and desperate socialising) where I lived. I should have hooked up my 2 KW QSC/Voice Systems PA and given them MY idea of what constitutes good music. Then again, I suppose my drunken landlord wouldn't have noticed, and if he HAD, that might have got me into trouble. Ah well, next time...

Here we go, veering off topic like a drunken rhino: In my student days, a friend of mine was having a party over at his place, but as time wore on he grew a little tired, so he decided to get rid of his guests. He turned up the stereo and chucked some Mongolian throat chanting on. He did NOT get the expected reaction, everybody got so into these fascinating sounds, trying to outdo each other imitating the chants and generally molesting their own tonsils. The party didn't stop until sometime the next day...

I got two noise complaints in my previous apartment in 7 years of living there. One time I had just bought my electric guitar and got a cable that would send my iTunes music out the headphone jack to the RCA CD input of my guitar amp. I had the music kranked up loud for hours that night, much to the annoyance of my neighbors.

Now I'm very aware of this problem and I keep it low or use headphones at night. Plus I moved into an apartment that has double walls and a room barrier to one side, as well as outside walls on the other three sides. So I've got plenty of audio isolation from my neighbors. I know how annoying loud music can be to others.

You being Brum-based, I'd have thought you'd prefer The Hawthorns, or St Andrews, or even Villa Park.

I have always been at the center of very noisy happenings. But, when I have been able, I try to make it an inclusive community affair. My first apartment, in Boston, had a stage in the basement. We rented it cheap for practice space, and had lots of nice gear laying around to play with. We often paid our rent by holding huge, cheap parties with live music. The police would usually be parked down the street, but it was too big for them to break up without much reason. It was rowdy, but very civilised! We had so many parties that I often met strangers in the city who actually happened to be on their way to my place, because they heard it was interesting! Then I got a bit reclusive after so much activity.

When I moved to Queens, the "stereo wars" got dangerous, because the people I stayed with had a generator and a several thousand watt sound system. And they weren't afraid to use it! It was always fun drifting in and out of sleep after visiting friends had been blasting old school hardcore tekno for several days in a row.

Now I own my own house, and it's usually very quiet here. Only noise issue I had was at 3AM a few weeks ago - police were snooping around my house with flashlights because a neighbor thought the soprano in Morton Subotnick's "Jacob's Room" was a burglar alarm... I knew I should have stuck to early Subotnick and stayed out of trouble!

I have neighbors who LOVE the game "Sing Star".

Picture 5 drunk students screaming stupid songs until 5 AM.

That's a masterclass in zen and self-control.

I believe in getting revenge later.

personally... I would create a max patch to generate an insane sub-bass boom every 7-10 minutes... set it running while they are trying to shake off their hangover... then leave for the day!

but... in a more practical sense... I recently acquired noise canceling headphones and they have made my life 100x better!

Every now and then I contemplate moving to a house in the countryside. I have a neighbour who plays the Beatles at high volume 24/7, enough to force me to raise the volume on the TV. As much as I love the Beatles etc.

What are you waiting for! It's the best move a man can make.

When I lived in apartment buildings, I've been known to confiscate the neighbours fuses on more than one occasion. It's very effective Twisted Evil

SO glad I have quiet neighbours. Even my previous neighbours, before they moved out, played their own music a little loud sometimes, but never late at night. They were nice folks.

Fortunately, my studio is two walls away from both neighbours and I never need to play it loud enough to be a nuisance to someone else.

But I have to say... sometimes the neighbourhood kids, when they play outside, scream so LOUD I'm tempted to pull up some bomb and gun sound FX and blast it out the window. I don't know what these kids are doing. They sound like they're dying in great pain. I can hear them through closed windows 50 feet away.
