It's time of portable computers and total portability as lifestyle. Why don't we have some really integrated computer related outboard on the market? Those audio interfaces with hhd place in it and, maybe, battery-powered
With build-in controllers etc. Is this a question of noise?

Noise would definitely be an issue.

Battery powered is bad enough (horrible noise!), but adding a giant spinning disc (which for audio, everyone wants 7200rpm or 10k), would make for a LOT of noise in the electronics.

However, it seems many DJs and laptop musicians don't really care much about noise, otherwise we wouldn't have low-end audio interfaces running off of usb or firewire power supplies, and DJs wouldn't be spinning mp3's, they'd demand something with far more fidelity for their art form.

So, I imagine a product like what you asking for will come to life sooner or later.

To some it's noise, to others they are just sources of modulation Wink

Rotational media is dead, just record it onto a substrate of carbon nanotubes.

Not yet, but soon. Rotational media has been my bread and butter for the last 22 years.

Yep, rational media does not exist.

With bug protein storage on the horizon and quantum computing emerging, yes I see the death of rotational media. But the hype always preceeds the reality and it may be a long time before stuff like that gets mainstream. I expect to see rotational media in use for quite some time.

Well, don't place your bets on Solid State Storage yet, Intel just set it back a few years from taking over rotational media, by turning it into a cache (not Turbo Cache, but now it's called Braidwood - putting a flash controller right on the southbridge, and caching the rotational (or other) media).

Since flash can't quite catch up with disk drives yet, it's encroaching in other ways.

Disk Drives have been putting food on my table also since 1995 Wink

Is it just me or are USB flash memory sticks the coolest thing that ever happened to computing products?

I installed Ubuntu on my Asus EEE using just a memory card (which is the only media it accepts apart from using USB slots), which I thought felt pretty cool somehow.

Edit: typo

What's the performance like? Does linux use virtual memory on a USB drive?
Did you install a desktop, or just a shell account?
How big of a USB drive do you need for Ubuntu?

I did the full default install of a plain Ubuntu, I didn't bother with any EEE-specific distribution. That's a desktop and the usual bunch of apps.

The performance is slow but acceptable. I've mainly used it for browsing the internet, running terminals and playing Robots2. It boots in a time comparable to my Windows XP system. I need to put it to sleep manually - it doesn't power down by itself when I close the lid.

The Ubuntu distibution I chose was just a little bit too big for my old trusty 512 Mb USB stick, I tried installing over the net and despaired over that a bit until I realised I have a 2 Gb SD card somewhere. I copied the distro to the card following some instruction somewhere, booted from it and Ubuntu was installed with no problems at all.

I don't know about virtual memory on USB specifically, but I would think that you can put a swap partition (posix-speak for virtual memory if I understand correctly) anywhere on a posix system - you just create a plain file and make it into a swap file using some command. I'm no expert on these things though.

/Stefan
