Voices and how they behave |
|
|
Anybody any explanation?
1 Set the synth in Mono mode and play a short lead melody line.
2 Get some Unison (9) and it functions as it should function.
3 Hold one key and switch Unison off.
4 Play the melody line and...
Stereo is gone.
Unison is much more than normal Unison (all extra Unison Voices doubled? = 8???)
There is polyphony where the Mode is still in Mono...
(I think 3 Voices available using one Slot)
Who knows what's is happening?

Maybe an audio example will illustrate...
1 Mono mode, no Unison
2 Mono mode, Unison
3 Poly mode, Unison
4 Poly mode, Unison, low key > switched to Mono mode = polyphony, retriggering low key by releasing last played key = a feature of Mono mode
5 Mono mode, Unison, low key > switched to Mono mode = polyphony (not used), Unison switched off = different phase or something? But why...
Editing in release time part 3 and trimmed of the low key beginning part 5.
Certainly there is a big difference in character of the sound.
Part 1 and part 5 compared, expecting to sound the same, part 5 seems to have some delay...

An explanation could be...
I was investigating how the synth react to the keyboard, like when holding a key and switching the Program will the sound of that key change yes or no? (Most synths will stay in the original sound for that particular key until it is released and pressed again, the NL2(X) will change immediately, where e.g. the NL3 will stay)
What does Unison provide?
It doubles the voice (sound played by the pressed key);
these two signals are directed to two outputs;
the two signals are detuned and
there is a small delay between the two signals.
When a key is hold the playing controls like Poly/Legato/Mono act not as they are planned: they keep the original settings. In the example the sound switches from two channel stereo to two channel mono;
it keeps its (in case of Mono) four detuned voices, but
it will keep the four voice delay...

Well, can't comment too much on the feature. Seems like a stuck note kind of thing. Just wanted to say you really explore your gear like a debugger. That's cool. I also played around with held notes while changing patches, and octave, etc. Can't say I found what you are looking at, though.
By the way, nice modulations in the 'I won't carry that' sample. I think there is some range there that I don't see with my Lead 1. Sounds good. _________________ Good good study, day day up! |

I would be surprized the Lead1 could make this sound, because there is the RingModulator involved, which is mixed with Osc1...
About Octave Shift, did you noticed switching it also works on the Portamento, so you can use it the same as the PitchStick set to an octave (Bend range 7), while the Stick can be set to another value?
I think some features I found can't be done, or not that easy, on a Rack...
Should try this out in the next days...

I can't remember too clearly. I wasn't really cataloging the behaviour.
I also wondered if some of the bahaviours you talk about here can be reproduced on a rack, with MIDI note on/off messages. _________________ Good good study, day day up! |
