HI there !
I've made one of those Nand Gate noise maker thingy's
Like this:http://www.fluxmonkey.com/electronoize/4093_Oscillator.htm
Little thing sounds great with the right combo of caps.

My questions is I want to have a CV in for all four gates, I want to be able to
connect a sequencer, amongst other things, into the Nand Gate Synth

My understanding is each gate of the 4093 has an 'in' and 'out', so would
I have to wire all four 'ins' into a single CV in?
It's a CV not Gate in, right?

Each NAND gate has 2 ins & an out, plugging a CV straight into one of those inputs will either do nothing, or, fry the chip (if its a bi-polar voltage)

Here;

http://www.uni-bonn.de/~uzs159/triphase.html

you can see that the 4093 is being used as a VCO to drive a 4053 switch, if you compare this to synthmongers super simple VCO schem. you'll see its basically the same, I'm asssuming you can drop the PNP transistor in the same way as with the 40106 set-up (in fact in this design the NAND gate is actually just being used as NOT anyways) I've not actually played with the 4093 + transistor so would be interested to see / hear if anyone else has.

To keep the NAND synth goodness it might be easier to just substitute a pot(s) for vactrols, then its up to you if you want to drive one gate or all four from one or many CV sources.

Actually I've already added pots to each gate, getting some good sounds
Just wanted to know if I could add a CV in for a sequencer.

well, I suck at helping it would seem...

use one of these ccts.

in place of your pots.

Ha,ha. don't worry everybody sucks at something.

Those voltage to resistance circuits look interesting, if not a bit confusing.
That part on the right, the resistance limiter doesn't seem to be connected
directly to the circuit except for the square box.

Confused so long as I don't suck at manners I'm fine with that.

If you can't be bothered to read the cct. notes then there's not much more I can do to try & help except to point out that - your pot connects to two points in the 4093 cct. (it is a variable resistor) & the little box on the right hand side of the schem. is labelled "resistance"

Good luck. Rolling Eyes

better luck next time, dgt.

what he was probably trying to say was: the purple rectangle on those drawings IS the output resistance: two connections, one from either side of the vactrol/resistance limiter (the square and circle inside the purple rectangle). replace the timing resistor in my oscillator drawing with those 2 connections to get CV control over the oscillator freq.

in fact, the easiest way to start would be to replace that timing resistor with a photo-resistor, mount a LED so it physically points at the photocell, and drive the LED with another oscillator or sequencer or whathave you... pretty crude, but these circuits in general are kind of down-n-dirty anyway.

have fun!

Well I doubt very much there will be a 'next time' you can only help someone insomuch as they are willing to help themselves.

Your 4093 page mentions photo-resisistors several times, if the OP had bothered to read - as I assumed he had - the page linked in the first post.

But, the name of the game is fun & experimentation, sorry for being shirty!

acidblue, this;

http://9w2bba.files.wordpress.com/2007/08/schematic-symbols_s.jpg

may come in handy for deciphering schems. I know I trawled google image for a few & they are a massive help!

The electronoize playshops are so packed with great info. its worth going thru them a couple of time to really grok wha gwan.

AHA! it's a photo cell.
The led is driving (flashing into) a photo cell, I get it now.

Actually i was asking about the rectangle enclosing the led and photo cell.
But you pointed me in the right direction and after a second look i figured it out.
Didn't realize that was a photo cell until you posted the schematic symbols link

I don't have any photo cells at the moment.
I wonder, could I leave out the led and photo cell for now,
and use that circuit for a CV in?

if you like crude, unplug he power and power the chip off a CV (through a diode)

Well I for one find this thread incredibly useful and have bookmarked it. (Aside from the communication and manners issues of course)

Great info - good links. Thanks DGtom (and bbob) - that clarifies some questions I had and will be helpful for the circuits I'm building!
