It's likely that an IC has been damaged or at best, very degraded. I was very suprised that the kits did not come with sockets so that easy IC changes could be made for such misshapes. For an extra buck or two, it would have saved lots of desoldering at the workshop. I to purchased a Benjolin but will socket all the IC's.
Thanks for saving someone else the grief you went through by clarifying the battery connections

Seeing as I didn't know what a Benjolin was I did a search and found the site - looks interesting!
One thing I noticed from the picture was that the ICs don't all face the same way! That is always a dangerous way to go... especially without sockets. I always provide sockets with workshop orientated kits otherwise people are bound to make mistakes!

Here is my Completed case for the Benjolin.
I agree that sockets would have been greatly appreciated. The PCB was very high quality for a home etched unit. Kudos to Rob and Joker for the workshop.

Holy cow Dan !!! That is really beautiful. I love it. Looks like a hard drive enclosure. Nice idea !! Now you have no excuse not to jam at EM 2010

Whoa Danno, you're fast, we built this board last saterday.
Anyway, labeling seems a good idea, I scribbled the names on my board with a marker for lfuture reference. Saves me from checking the schematic later.
(note: Dan's cicuitboard is mounted with the two headers on the left side) |

Yes it is a Hard Drive enclosure. The USB circuit in the enclosure had failed. Seemed just perfect use for the thing.
Worked on the case two days straight. I rather like it. |
