Due to lack of time we didn't get to connect the batteries at the workshop building the Benjolin, so the circuitboards were tested with Rob's optional In/out board.

I soldered the battery holders myself later, but made a mistake. So my Benjolin got hot and smelly, I hope it still works.

Here's how it should/could be done (if you do not have the female header connectors that could also be used and make it look more slick)

Looking at the solderside the voltageconverter transistors are at the upper right corner. The left of these is for -9V, the one to the right provides +9V.

The + and - 9 volt voltage regulators need 2-3 volts surplus to work properly so at he header side you could use 12-15 volts.

Batteries need to be connected at the output of the regulators, here two male headers (connectors) are available at the circuitboard.

I included a JPG to indicate how to connect batteries if you do not use the female connectors for the battery headers. Note: the black wire of the + voltage and the red wire of the - voltage battery go to ground.

Oh, hot and smelly, now thats not good Wink Nice to have met you at EM09 Wink

It's likely that an IC has been damaged or at best, very degraded. I was very suprised that the kits did not come with sockets so that easy IC changes could be made for such misshapes. For an extra buck or two, it would have saved lots of desoldering at the workshop. I to purchased a Benjolin but will socket all the IC's.

Thanks for saving someone else the grief you went through by clarifying the battery connections Wink

Seeing as I didn't know what a Benjolin was I did a search and found the site - looks interesting!

One thing I noticed from the picture was that the ICs don't all face the same way! That is always a dangerous way to go... especially without sockets. I always provide sockets with workshop orientated kits otherwise people are bound to make mistakes!

PS - electri-fire - I see you're in Breda - do you know Tom Tok Tek?

Here is my Completed case for the Benjolin.

I agree that sockets would have been greatly appreciated. The PCB was very high quality for a home etched unit. Kudos to Rob and Joker for the workshop.

Holy cow Dan !!! That is really beautiful. I love it. Looks like a hard drive enclosure. Nice idea !! Now you have no excuse not to jam at EM 2010 Wink

I have mine and studied the circuit one more time ...

Whoa Danno, you're fast, we built this board last saterday.

Anyway, labeling seems a good idea, I scribbled the names on my board with a marker for lfuture reference. Saves me from checking the schematic later.

(note: Dan's cicuitboard is mounted with the two headers on the left side)

Thanks,

Yes it is a Hard Drive enclosure. The USB circuit in the enclosure had failed. Seemed just perfect use for the thing.
Worked on the case two days straight. I rather like it.

Just figured out that in my haste, I put the knob labels on incorrectly. I've replaced the photo. Sorry for the fuzzy image.
