I'm interested in playing live for the first time, and I was wondering what you all thought would be a good hardware sequencer for this setup:

Equipment being used:
Korg ER-1
Yamaha RX-11 drum machine
7+ analog drum synths
Roland SH-201

How they're being used:
Currently, I am creating patterns on the ER-1. However, I have assigned each voice a MIDI note (there are 10 voices, which include the 2 audio-in channels since you can assign MIDI notes to them as well) instead of using its built-in voices. This MIDI data is sent to the RX-11 drum machine. Why the RX-11? Because there are individual outs for each sample! I've assigned each sample to its respective MIDI note on the ER-1. Thus, the RX-11 drum samples trigger the analog drum machines.

Now, I'm throwing the Roland SH-201 into the mix. The 2 main reasons I bought the synth are the 1) obvious old school analog synth style knob tweaking and 2) the arpeggiator. Controlling this would obviously require more than what the ER-1 could provide, especially if I decide to do some step sequencing.

I'm sure most people would just ask, "just use a laptop, weirdo!" but I'd like to avoid it so I can focus on knob tweaking on the synth, drum machines, and various effects pedals I'd be using. Also - no MPCs. That's just too much for this. Wink

It's been a long while since I've been contributing to the forum. I've just moved out to Arizona and can finally visit regularly again!

As you referred to your analog drumSynts as Drum Machines it took me a while to grasp what you were doing. That is: using the RX-11 as a MIDI note to trigger converter.

I have a Doepfer Regelwerk I like a lot. It does 8-part MIDI step sequencing and works as a 16 fader MIDI controller. Also it has 8 gate and control voltage outputs.

I think they're out of production though, you'ld have to find a used one.

oh right - sorry about that. Embarassed That's exactly what I'm doing.

Wow! That thing is crazy! Probably a bit more than I need, though. I was thinking of something more like the Yamaha QY-700.

I've got an older QY-70 that I'd sell for cheap if you were interested.

The clear plastic over the LCD is broken, but the machine works perfectly otherwise. It has great sequencing built-in, and is very tight (480ppqn IIRC). Patterns, songs, and even a variation scheme: 8 parts of a song (defined as "intro" "chorus1" etc, so you can just hit 1 button to change to a new group of sequences. Great little box, but I just don't find myself using it lately.

PM me if you'd like.

hmm... I wonder why I didn't look into the QY-70 more. I certainly don't need something as huge as the QY-700. Perhaps I saw the design and just thought it was an SU-10 or SU-200 type thing (not that those are out of the question, either).

Anyways, I'll grab a copy of the manual and look into it. Thanks!
