I'm looking to use RJDJ live on stage, but in order to do so I need to separate the mic input from a direct out. Is there a product that allows me to send a signal into the iPhone while simultaneously sending the output to the headphone jack?

we just talked about this right here. You can get breakout cables for the line outs which will separate the line outs, but other than a specific hardware add-on, I am still unaware of any other line input breakout cable or otherwise.

I have thought about this, and finally did a search yesterday. I'm thinking about using the jack headphone/mic plug to make things as simple as possible, and soldering my own cable. I do, however, want to use the aux out on my mixer which is a line signal, so that needs to be padded down for a more efficient use. Also it seems like a good idea to kill the low current that is powering the electret mic, 2.7 V according to the internets.

My aim is to use my ipod touch as an effects unit, in an aux loop configuration, mono out from mixer and stereo return back to mixer.

Using a standard four-connector minijack as is some times used for video, it shouldn't be that tricky. The stereo out (from the itouch) is simple enough, so that leaves us with the mic connection (into the itouch). After trying to understand how padding works, I found this little diagram on e-panorama and it seems to sort out both issues in one go.

Take a look at the third circuit down, named "20 dB PAD for line to electret microphone input":

http://www.epanorama.net/circuits/line_to_mic.html

It looks promising, so I will get my soldering iron and multimeter out and have a closer inspection. I am curious about how this will sound, and if there are any obvious impedance issues I have to consider. I don't have much knowledge about electronic circuits but I can solder.

Any thoughts on this is highly appreciated! Very Happy

Just finished this a liitle while ago, and it works really well! I can now access RJDJ or Jasuto from my mixer!

Here is the circuit. The capacitor is 10 uF. I went for a 20 db pad, but more is better, like 30 or even 40 from what I can tell.

Cool

That's funny. I was just sketching up some notes for building a breakout plug for the iPhone to use with some of my bent toys. I will have to try your plug too. Thanks! Smile
