Pat Metheny's Orchestrion Subject description: Guitar-controlled Orchestrion
I've seen orchestrions in Europe and admired collections of them in museums such as the one in Utrecht. I had no idea that one of my favorite jazz guitarists had a lifelong obsession with them.
I realize some, maybe a lot of people will say "why not just use a regular MIDI guitar setup, with sequencer, sampler, etc.?". Sure, but there's something really damn cool about this concept and the execution.
At some point in this video, Metheny demonstrates his guitar controlling Orchestrion instruments. MIDI from his guitar is converted into voltages for the solenoids that "play" the instruments.

Dah! I was gonna post this while a few weeks back, but forgot to
What's so crazy, is that it just sounds like Metheny doesn't it?? You want him to be doing Kraftwerk, but it just sounds so jazz!! _________________ ACHTUNG!

I've seen Pat on quite a few occasions- well worth the visit! the best gig I saw him play was with Roy Haynes and Dave Holland, that was at the Mean Fiddlers in Harlesden, North London. It was a tiny venue, and naturally it was absolutely heaving!! Pat had his Synclavier guitar with him (it looked more like a sewing machine!!!!). He played some mean Ornette Coleman shit on that- mad saxophones barking madly! _________________ ACHTUNG!

right what all this technology is about if it sounds like the usual Metheny group
If you gave him nothing but a BugBrand Weevil, he'd still find a way to make music that sounds like his music. _________________ Current and recent work on Soundcloud
