Starting at $499, it's obviously priced to compete with and destroy the Amazon Kindle. Why buy a Kindle as your E-reader when you can pick up an iPad that can do a lot more, in full color and better resolution?

This thing will also destroy the Jazzmutant Lemur. Guaranteed somebody will come up with iPad apps that do everything the Lemur does, so one's total investment is far less than the $2000+ US price of the Lemur.

TouchOsc works great on the iPhone. A Pro edition of this program is all what is needed to kill the poor Lemur.

Besides that, I see no much point in the gadget, frankly. Maybe with the new more powerful processor someone programs a virtual modular? Wink

How about a programmable/user-configurable wireless control surface for your favorite DAW?

And yes, expanded user-interface and horsepower potential for internal synthesis.

It also displays the content of books, "newspapers", sheet music, etc. with greater resolution than Kindle, and larger size than iPhone.

iPhone apps will run unmodified, scaled up. I'm guessing the multitouch support is the same as on an iPhone. You can get it with or without 3G (it will look pretty funny if you phone with it like an iPhone - like a one of those huge phones you see in cartoons).

I'm fairly excited! Smile I'm guessing you'll program it like an iPhone, which I've heard is a bit of a hassle. Unless Google makes an AndroidPad I might end up with one of these eventually.

Oh my God, I just realized how awesome Jasuto Pro will be on this! More power, larger screen. Who needs a Reactable!

I hate to say it, but I so want this, even the basic $499 model, for music apps alone if not for anything else!

I've certainly been saying that if all it ended up being is a big ass Touch and wasn't too expensive that It'd be great and it turned out to be more than that and I'll probably end up getting one,but...

I'd LOVE to know if anyone has used TouchOsc with an app that speaks OSC because it IS quite "zippery" as Edison Rex noted in the TouchOsc thread.I would really like to know if this comes from TouchOsc or from Osculator,or the actual resolution of the screen/pad which isn't any greater on the Ipad than the Touch if I'm not mistaken.(I don't know if the Lemur's is higher)

It's not so zippery as to render it unusable and,as I said,I'll probably get one at some point, but I still gotta wonder whether the Lemur performs better.

Beyond a doubt, the price point is a HUGE advantage, but It might not "destroy the Lemur" with anyone but the folks that couldn't afford one anyway.

That said,it still is pretty cool. For someone complaining about big fingers and small controls it's just what the doctor ordered.

There was a funny cartoon in the paper yesterday on the subject.
Please don't take it the wrong way, because I'm as much of an Apple fan as any of you.

Well I am quite disappointed, I wanted a apple tablet really, something that worked just like a MacbookPro but in a tablet form.

I can see the use of an overgrown iTouch but you are never going to run say Ableton Live on it.

Maybe they will release a proper laptop based version soon after.

Well I am not too sure about these.

The Kindle uses an eInk screen, these are pretty good screens, they use low amounts of battery (I have an eBook that lasts about a month between charges), can easily be read in bright light and are very easy on the eyes. I will be very surprised if the iPad will destroy the eBook eInk market.

The Lemur does quite a lot, physics, scripting etc. I have though of writing a Lemur replacement for something like the iPad and I think you are looking at least a couple of man years work for something of the same functionality. This would set the price point quite high I think. If I was out of work though I think I would concentrate on this.

The Lemurs days are numbered but I would say it has at least a year left

Andy

I doubt it. But they do have a 'touchscreen'.

At first I thought that I wouldn't want or need an iPad, but now thinking about it, and with the line of work I do, having an iPad would be very useful.

Anyone want to buy an iPhone? Very Happy

A 2.5 Ghz Core Duo OSX machine in tablet form for only $500???

I'd want one for sure! I also want a levitating car, universal health care, end to poverty everywhere, and world peace. Laughing

In seriousness, I see the iPad not as a revolutionary product in and of itself, but an indication of future possibilities from Apple. A dream machine for me, too, would be a multitouch Macbook Pro-in-a-tablet, with a detachable dock (included!) that has all the USB 3.0, Firewire, etc. connectors and real keyboard.
