fantastic... i love the background effects, like the jabbering voice-like sound I thought I heard at one point! and the overall sense of progression and space!
such complex designs to me, too. i can't wait to hear the noodle radio! |

Another great one, Jan.
These G2 noodles are great. I wish I had a G2 engine in my car. _________________ --Howard

This resonates at several spots simultaneously ...
We should ask Clavia for a car radio sized G2 on 12 Volts, even more important than having VST plugins & stuff, no really !!
It reminds me on a project done by Moniek Toebosch in which she transmitted heavenly choirs of bleeps, to be heard on some radio channel but only when driving on a certain dyke somewhere between the polders iin the Netherlands.
I never got to heear it though, and so probably my imagination lifts me a bit too much right now from solid ground, but it definitely resonates some bells.
All the bells, damn it. I'm gonna clone this G2 thing for it, or rebuild it, or whatever is needed !-)

You can't possibly make a snapshot of this... it keeps changing for hours.
Amazing.
Tell me, Jan, when you start creating a patch like this one, do you have any idea where you're going? |

Thank you for spending that much time on this. Indeed snapshots don't capture the whole thing, essentially :-)

No, but I do know where to start usually.
This particular one started with a vague idea about how tectonic plates would move and slip along each other - although I might not be able to find it back anymore in the patch itself ....
At other times it's a musical idea about sound that I want to try out, or a sequence of notes that I want to explore. It can be a technical idea as well, like wanting to do 'something' with an up/down counter. Or I found a nice thing in a patch made by someone else that I would like to automate, or incorporate, smart theft I guess.
During the process some more ideas usually creep in, sometimes not though but then the results are more likely to be boring.
And always I have this general concept in mind that starts to behave liike a second nature since I've been on it for many years now. This is the idea of trying to balance between order and chaos. In a good noodle this line is visible througout the patch, I think. In the control structure and in the sound structure as well.
The G2 has some interesting new possibilities. Not only to make larger structures than was possible with the NM Classic but also some of the new modules are very interesting:
Like the frequency detector modules that make it possible to make part of a patch listen to another part, but in a more imperfect way than just connecting the control signals.
Other interesting modules I think are the delay based modules, not just to create echoes but also to create a sort of a canon like structure in which for instance a tone sequence can later be heard as a coloration sequence on some other signal.
But I have the feeling that I just started scratching the surface a bit here, the possibilities are endless for now. It seems to open up possibilities to try controlled chaos at a larger scale, applied over a set of patches.
Drawback is that sometimes I sit puzzled for hours as to what the heck is causing that nasty detail that I want out - things tend to grow pretty organic after a while.
So ... no I do not know where I'll end up when I start on a noodle, and indeed sometimes the process 'fails' in that I (or others) don't like the results - although sometimes a little extra work on a failed patch can bend it back on track.
It's a bit like sculpturing, with a bit of a strange material to work on. And it's a bit like computer programming but here one is allowed to make a strructural mess of it
