You have Kontakt/Battery or just use the samples?

Native Instruments Machine comes to mind. Would likely be easyer to port your Kontakt /Battery sounds into it. I didn't check, but it is maybe even preconfigured already.
You are familiar with the NI user interface. It has a browser to find and categorize vast amounts of sound.
A used MC505 or MC909 maybe? MC909 has an inbuilt sampler. Although I've seen other mechanically wonky MC505 it would be a cheap option and it would eliminate or reduce learning curve.

The NI Machine seems more portable than the MPC's. Another NI toy to add could be the Kore2. (the Kore1 has built in soudcard but it's too slow). The Kore has presets for your Battery/Kontakt, can load most VST's, and adds more knobs to tweak (to add to the Machine's). Also lightweight, affordable (can be found used), with a vast amount of nicely tweakable presets. Needs the computer attached to it, so less practical to travel.
