I feel stupid asking this, but what exactly am I listening for when I put Full Unison in my Ion? I just don't hear any difference. What is happening?

i don't have an ion , but normaly when switching on unison you put more oscillators under one key . so when you play you would get a broader, sound while yu hear the oscillators all together and slightly detuned
often the grade of detuning can be adjusted too.
greetings sunny

I don't have an ion, but traditional unison is a variation of mono mode which stacks all voices. Some synths offer a variation which plays in poly mode and dynamically adjusts the number of voices stacked depending on how many notes are held. Both modes will sound the same if you only play one key.

On the Ion you have the choice of 2, 4 or full. There also is a detune on the same menu. When I put it on I hear almost no difference. I tend not to split the keyboard so the voices are usually stacked anyway. Is that why I don't hear much of a difference?

at least you should hear some phasing difference when detuning/spreading the different oscillators.
afcourse the effect will sound different on analog oscillators as they are slightly detuned and drifting all the time

I see. (I'm trying it now). It seems to me to be rather subtle. There is a bit louder sound. The detuning and drift I can hear, but the Unison mode just doesn't seem very dramatic of a difference.

slightly OT (different synth) but I can assure you, especially through amplification I can hear a *major* difference when I hit Unison mode on my JP6... 12 analog osc's stacked under one key is enought to stop hearts and burst skulls, with the right filter settings. Wink

(realizing that I am posting aimless chatter to old threads... time to call it a night Rolling Eyes)

Since posting this, I have figured out what I was doing wrong and now use the Ion's unison quite often.
