Subject description: Composition app using traditional notation interface

One thing that happens to me often is I'll be at work, or in a supermarket, or riding on a subway, or some other location when a musical idea hits me. If all my musical ideas were techno/beat oriented, then all I have to do is fire up one of the many sequencer apps out there (Doppler Pad, Nanoloop, etc.), enter in my idea, and be done.

But if the idea isn't as strongly beat oriented, then I'm relegated to singing the idea into the Voice Memo app, which is awkward if I have harmonies in mind.

Symphony looks like an interesting solution:

It exports to MIDI too.

I just bought it and tried it a bit. I was disappointed to see that the time signature options are all variations of 4/4 and 3/4 (eg. 3/8, 6/Cool. I don't really care if it does all the notation stuff properly as far as display - I was just hoping for an app in which I can enter musical ideas if they materialize while I am away from my DAW, synths, guitars, etc. - for example I'm walking in a shopping mall, and the idea isn't necessarily conducive to the sequencer paradigm. I get a lot of ideas for pieces that are lost because I forget them before I have a chance to record them.

If all my compositional ideas were in 4/4 and beat oriented, any of the popular sequencer apps (bleep!Box, SunVox, technoBox, etc). would be fine for me. Unfortunately, they are not.

I'll probably give this app another spin in the future. This app was in version 2.0 last December and it's already at 2.5 now, just 5 months later.

Next up will be Intua Beatmaker (finally!)
