I sense that one or two here are now owners of both an iPad and an iPhone or iTouch. Does anyone care to share some thoughts on how the iPad compares to the earlier, smaller devices?

Does the multitouch feel the same - applications having the same snappy response etc? Have you tried running an old iPhone app scaled up on the iPad (e.g. BeBot, Jasuto), and how did that work? One would think that bigger is generally better, but are there some unexpected drawbacks (besides not being as portable, fitting in your pocket etc)?

/Stefan

Hi Stefan Smile

Anything imo, with a bigger display is better. I rarely use many of the complex music apps I bought for my iPhone (like, and I have to say, Jasuto), simply because the screen is too small (and they make me feel sick!)

If you've got the money, go for an iPad. iPhone is better suited to less complicated things- like and including making phone calls/ texts.

One app I use all the time on my iPhone is 'Things' and 'Around me', mainly because they use technologies within the iPhone to its best abilities. The single function apps, like the mellotron and the stylophone, also work better on the iPhone interface, because then the device is more of a singular instrument- if you see what I mean?

Tom

Exactly my sentiment. My main use of my iTouch is playing games as I commute on trains. I have an Anroid phone that I use for calendars and stuff.

If the touch control is as good on the iPad as on the iPhone or touch it's a no-brainer - I have to have it. I just want to confirm that the touch interface actually is as good. Control control on the touch beats the hell out of anything similar I've tried (both concerning the use of more than two fingers and the snappy response you get from apps) - it's kind of too good to be true. It wouldn't be the strangest thing in history if it didn't perform as well on a larger device, with more pixels to handle. Life has been full of little disappointments like that.

The iPad has been designed around multitouch gestures, unlike for example Windows 7 Mobile, which although has interface touch abilities, is essentially a mouse/pointer driven interface.

I think that you'll be blown away by the interface once the thing arrives, but remember, it is really down to the developers who ultimately will make this thing 'sing'.

Hi Stefan, I have an iPad and the first iPhone. The iPad is definitely as responsive if not more so. The display resolution is obviously higher so it feels "tighter" with apps built for it. Apps at 2x resolution take up the full screen and are a little pixelated as expected, but more than acceptable. Having the larger screen is much nicer.

I know it has an insane number of touch sensors, but I'm not sure if there are more per square inch/centimeter compared to the iPhone. Regardless, if you like the touch interface of the iPhone/iTouch you will love the iPad. The first time you use it and see an app full screen and interact with it you will be amazed. After a couple of weeks, when the initial wonder resides, the feeling when using the device turns into a sheer appreciation for the practicality of it. It's just so convenient. I use mine mainly as a book reader, for email, games, browsing, managing my Netflix queues, and of course some synth apps. Line 6 came out with a MIDI cable for it. I received a review copy and love it. Developers will need to write apps for it, so don't expect it to work with existing apps, but the possibility is there. I wrote a mini review on it here: http://matrixsynth.blogspot.com/2010/05/direct-midi-for-ipad-is-here.html

I picked up my iPad on day one in the US. I actually waited in line four hours for the launch event. This is the first time I've ever done this BTW. It was actually a great experience standing in line with others and finding out what they were most interested in. The iPad is a revolutionary device. Yes it is an extension of the iPhone/iTouch, and prior to that the Handspring and Palm devices in that it is a device that can morph into anything anyone writes for it, but it just feels so much more than that. It will be interesting to see what Google does with their upcoming Android based tablets.

Sounds good Matrix, thanks. Smile I won't be standing in line when it gets here, but I most probably will get one at some point.

Someone at work has imported an iPad, and I got the opportunity to fiddle with for a couple of minutes yesterday. Yeah, there's nothing wrong with that one. G.A.S.!

I have the phone and the pad. I love both. Music apps work better on the iPad because of the bigger screen area. Some great apps aren't even offered on the iPhone, like iElectribe. A great thing is that you don't have to rebuy your iPhone apps; they load automatically when you sync your new iPad to your computer.

For music, if you only get one, get the iPad. The iPhone and the iPad make a great combination. I play both in my sets now.

I was hoping you'd say something, Howard. Smile Good input, thanks. Now, will I wait until they sell it here, or import from somewhere...

I must admit I have a love/hate relationship with my iPad.

It seems slow/glitchy compared to my iPhone 3gs.

The WIFI is just absolute crap, all the recent update did was stop it displaying an error, now it thinks the WIFI is fine but it just doesn't work, I have to switch the WIFI on and off every 15 minutes to keep using it. I have no problems with any other WIFI device, including the apple iPhone!

I am thinking of just getting a bloody apple airport extreme for it as it surely must work with that.

On the other hand apps like GoodReader, SketchBook Pro,, Air Display and MorthWiz are superb in the iPad.

If only they could sort out the WIFI Sad

No such problem here. Here the iPad´s WiFi seems to be better than on the 3GS. scratch

My experience of Wifi anything has mostly hinted that a six-sided die is cast every five minutes. If the die shows a five or a six Wifi is turned off and says "can't connect" until the next time a die is cast. I used to think it's because the my thick brick walls and 12 wifi routers in neighbouring flats, but then I visited my my parents out on the country and it's the same business with their wireless router.

I'm afraid I would have to agree with that. I've had nothing but shit with both my last 2 ISP's. I actually got so desperate with O2 (who kept fucking up my password), that I bought a MobileMe account, and have had nothing but joy with them-but of course this is slightly different. I'm not 100% sure, but I think it's a mixture of crappy/dodgy extra 'refurbished' IP addresses that these dinosaurs have bought in the last year or so (that and incompetent over paranoid unneeded lazy British IT depts owned by Birmingham Shity Council), an absolutely useless mainly copper cable based BT telephony system, well out of date and in desperate need of renewal. A complete lack of investment in business since the 2nd world war! Oh yes and something to do with SSL. Laughing

England? Schisse!!

edit- and despite all that socialist crap from the so called 'real socialist', John Prescott, he still became a member of the house of lords. Dirty hypocrite. Twisted Evil

Rant over.

I am an anarchist. But what kind of Anarchist- I don't know. All I know who call themselves "Anarchists" tend to be of the anarcho-syndicalist variety, but nothing says anarchist to me about them apart from they are essentially all liberals and being an "anachist" seems like good pose factor.

So I'm not an anarchist. WTF am I then? Do you know what you, all you readers of electro-music.com are?

Okay. Second rant over. I feel really sick, and my throat hurts like a bastard.

Flu sucks, and so does Ed Balls. Change your name Ed, then you may get in again? Wink
