my dream synth would be something like a Nord modular G2 with modules modelled on existing analogue circuits that were sonically indistinguishable from the real thing, with the ability to patch without needing a PC and enough DSP to switch sounds and patch without the horrible silence you get now

Sounds like you want an Origin. I just ordered one...
can't say I've been that impressed with what I've heard from the origin so far and I'm not a big fan of the arturia recreations I've tried, but it seems like a nice concept _________________ Jez

but, as nice as dreaming of perfect synths might be, sometimes it's better to just get on with it and work within the limitations _________________ Jez

While some of these dream synths require complex user interfaces or impossible ones with current technology, there does seem to be a commonality to some of them. Apparently polyphany and generally multiple outputs is a big deal, among other themes. I wonder if we should gather up ideas and consider building such a synth, as hardware or software... just a thought.

Les
I would add portability.
Perhaps a stack of these boards would make a nice dream synth:

Back in the early 90s I visualized my dream synth, which was essentially a digital (or fiber optic, see below) interface connected to a large bank of truly analog modules.
The way I saw it, there would be a fairly large controller section with all the knobs, sliders, switches, etc. but these would be virtual controls that would connect to the analog sound engine via a cable or cables. The controller section would be only 2.5" to 3" thick, but wide and tall enough to hold the controls for the whole synth.
The system would have to have a fixed number/configuration of modules because it would be problematic to add to the controller.
Anyway, without understanding anything about fiber optics really, it seemed to me that maybe the controller could communicate to the sound engine via fiber optics. And since then I've seen where fiber optics have been used to to transmit analog signals..."Analog Optical Link" or "Analog Fiber Link". Like this product: http://www.lab-systems.com/products/fib-opt/afl500/index.html
Patching, I was thinking, would be done with switches or push-button matrix style connections.
Spensive! And dependent upon either Windoze or sMac. I'd have to pass. Buying synths that depend on a specific computer OS is, in my book, not cool. These things should stand on their own.

I would also agree that the limitations make you work and create more. Get's you to find the workarounds that you or someone else may not have thought of initially. Think of all the limitations yesteryear had and we got a legacy of great music to listen and look to for inspiration of limitations.

Visualizing horrible picture of someone sticking his hand through a hole in his head, brain substance splattering everywhere....
But yeah... some application that can look into my mind and record the music I'm thinking of, that would be pretty awesome. _________________ Antimon's Window @soundcloud@Flattr@myspaceA bloghome - you can't explain music

I also find that the finished music never quite turns out as good as the original idea seemed when you first had it! Even in my case where the ideas come to me as completely abstract patterns and composing techniques - I never hear music in my head.
And even if you record your brain activity directly, you're never going to be able to get the electrodes inside the right parts of your brain, let alone find the correct mappings to convert the voltages into the sounds you're imagining...
