Hello guys.

I've been using my Micro Modular for almost 7 years now, but this is the first time I've discovered that it gets really hot near the power input, and also a bit on the whole right part of the housing. I've been using this little baby "A LOT", and had never seen (or touched Wink ) anything like this.

Could anyone confirm if this is normal behavior, or is it just mine going coocoo ?

Thanks Smile

hi X, long time no see :-)

How hot does it get, like pssst when you touch it with a wet finger? or more like the water from your hot water tap?

long time i've seen a micro, (engine here) but stuff does this when the power supply capacitors are not ok anymore, (dried out, or gone slowly for other reasons...) than the voltage stabiliser is going nuts...

it does use the metal-housing to cool isn't it?
first you could measure the adapter if you're getting the right voltage...
i don't think its normal if you can cook on it...

r.

Hello again Smile

Blue Hell: Hey, it is not as hot as a hot stove, but when you try to touch it with the outside part of of your finger - it does hurt a bit...

drapdap: Yes, it does have a metal housing, but none of which is touching hot transistors...

I've made a picture, showing which part of it gets so hot. This is LM2940CS transistor. It is a voltage regulator from what i've found, but I've never payed attention to its temperature...

...could someone please tell me if it always was this hot ? Thanks Smile

PS. Sorry, but I don't have any thermocouple here...

Its pretty normal when (linear) voltage regulators go hot - probably when it gets too hot to its own likings it will shut down (a lot of linear regulators do that). So as long as it doesn't shut itself off on a hot day you'd be okay.

When it hurts the outside of your finger it would be 70 C or hotter, but as long as a wet finger on it doesn't make the water boil its cooler than 100 C, this is a normal range for such devices to operate in.

as blue hell said its normal when they get hot..

if its hotter now than it used to be you really might check your power supply.. when its giving over voltage the regulator has to work more and therfore gets hotter

OK, thanks guys, I'm a little bit less worried now Smile, and I'll check the power supply of course, as it is not the original one.
