I decided that I would like to experiment with some physical bass string sounds after I came across a long stick of wood in the streets. It seemed perfect, so I set about building the one string electric junk bass.

Construction is very simple.

Machine head tuner is mounted to the wood.

I used an electrical grounding bar as a sort of nut.

I had a piezo element laying around, so that turned into the pickup and bridge.

The finished thing:

Well, it sounds better than I expected it to, to be honest. Here's a clean recording: http://projects.pemdasi.net/one_string_bass/one_string_clean.mp3

And a recording with a drum track and some effects: http://projects.pemdasi.net/one_string_bass/pemdasi_-_demo_one_string_bass.mp3

So, considering the only thing I paid for in this project was the E bass string, I'm pretty happy with the results.

Cool man, hope you enjoy your one-string bass!

It surely does...

I even have the string somewhere, so...
I was thinking about implementing this into a 'stumpf fiddle'.
A simple and complete rhythm section!
