Wattage for nearfield monitoring |
|
|
Hey -- haven't been around much lately.
Maybe quick question -- I have an old pair of Tannoy PBM 5 II's, but can't find anything online about their wattage rating. Lots of stuff about PBM 6.5, but the 5 II's are just old enough that the only thing I could find is an old sound on sound review (basically favorable, but no technical specs).
I'm looking at an amp for near field monitoring rated at 30 W. I'm fairly sure this is sufficient but my partner wants reassurance before plunking down 400 RMB (in China -- where there is no such thing as a return policy -- or rather, there is -- the policy is "no returns").
Crownaudio.com says:
Quote: | Total amplifier power required in various applications
• Nearfield monitoring: 25 W for 85 dB SPL average (with 15 dB peaks), 250 W for 95 dB SPL average (with 15 dB peaks) |
Doesn't hurt to ask if anybody disagrees based on practical experience.
Buying soon -- thanks in advance for any advice.

I would imagine 30W would be plenty. I have a pair of KEF Reference 101 speakers, which are basically an LS3/5a with a flatter crossover. I run a 25W NAD amp into them, and they can more than fill up a large room even.
It seems counterintuitive, but an amp that is underpowered can damage speakers easier than an amp that is overpowered. An amp with too much power will simply make the speakers distort when the volume is too much, assuming that you haven't severely overloaded them.
However, an amp that is underpowered will clip badly when the speakers are drawing more current than the amp can put out. If allowed to continue, the tweeters are at a big risk for overheating and failing due to a burnt out voice coil. |
