i wonder if it would be a good idea to buy a couple of hundert chips together and divide between the buyers.

That would be a good idea, for sure, and I already bought enough of them for my needs a few months ago, but I seriously doubt Alesis has a few hundreds of ASIC chips for sale anymore ...

well a respectable productionlifespan. that's for sure.

Very nearly a ten-year run. Pretty good for an analog polysynth from anyone...

What a weird combination of stress, joy, struggle, trouble, and other experiences, was the Andromeda project...thanks to all who have taken enjoyment from it!

They still have some. I contacted them about it a few days ago. If I don't sell my Andy to get more Buchla I'll probably invest in some.

Hi Paugui,
Don't know if you have one yet , ( I can share my experience ) if you find one second hand it is likely to have been very well looked after ( though yes always a gamble ) , I bought my A6 second hand a few years ago through ebay and am very happy with it sunny . I purchased one from USA even though there was one here in Australia at the time for sale and payed a fair bit more, as I trusted the seller a lot more through thurough clear and lengthy conversations, ask a million questions of the seller and get the feel of how they respond etc transformer Also depends as you say - how much are you willing to pay second hand?

And other posters what are the spare parts you refer to stocking up on? Is this a good idea buy them and store them ? If so I would be interested in a bulk purchase share arangement also.Do owners of other discontinued synths do this?

Yeah, spares are still being sold. I had mine repaired not by Alesis (mod wheel and jitter while adjusting values) and it works like a charm now.

I might order some parts just to be on the safe side.

Cool. What are the prices like for chips & where to get them? Is it typical to get loads of replacement parts - I notice a few guys are doing it. OR do none of you guys just not trust the andromeda's quality?

They would love to make more but they can't. It's not that they are stupid or don't get it. They love the A6 and wish they could make more.

The 1K chips cannot be made any longer. The FAB is dying and is considered old technology so the manufacturer of the chips, not Alesis, can't produce them.

They were making up something like a 1000 chips and getting maybe 50 that actually passed QC. The number was getting less and less each run. This is also the same chip that was used in the Ion. They shut down the Ion sales early so as to be able to make all the A6's they could.

No Andromeda analog oscillator/filter ASIC chips (ASO & ASF) in Ion, that's pure nonsense. Ion is completely DSP based.

By "1K" chip he probably means Alesis/Wavefront AL3101 DSP-1K chip:

http://www.wavefrontsemi.com/forums.html?id=11,13,0,0,1

There are 9 of those chips inside Ion.

This chip has not been used for FX processing in Andromeda because it uses 84-pin ASIC S4DSP chip similar to (or the same as) the one from their Wedge effect processor and perhaps some other products (like S4 synthesizer etc.) ...

This info is from Andromeda and Ion service manuals.

I would say a big part of the reason this discsussion is taking place about spare parts is people love their A6 so much they want to stock up on spare parts just in case for LONG LONG TERM , though if you were to stock up on 1 of each of the parts listed on the page mentioned above, it may not be far off in price to have a second A6 if you can find and afford a second one over other gear you may need/want.

Not to thwart a company who have obviously put in a bunch of money, and thanks to them for keeping the faith, but I have some parts as well, taken from when manufacturing threw stuff out during the bankruptcy...bags of buttons and tact switches (note that the pcb-mount switch is easily available and is a quality part; I think you can get them at Mouser and some Euro companies), I have a few endcaps and other bits, stored because the machine needs it. I don't sell them, and I can't deal with a rush of inquiries, suffice to say, if needed, I'll send out things like switches and buttons for a few dollars shipping costs. I also have some MMT8 sequencer cases which are nearly good as new, same again, just pay for shipping.
