Well, this may sound bad, but whatever people are willing to pay. I used to think selling bent stuff was really lame. I got into it back in the late 90s, so I've seen a few different waves of interest come and go. Kind of funny really to watch it get "discovered" or even "invented" over and over again. It's a shame that most of the great resources that existed 5 years ago have more or less vaporized.
So back to my point about money. I used to preach that it was wrong to charge money for something that is so easy to do. I tried convincing people that all they needed was $10 and a screwdriver (the "Big Tex starter kit" as my friends called it). But a lot of people just wanted instant gratification (what, bending isn't instant gratification??) So I'd modify their keyboards for them, teach them how to do it, etc. Some people just want to play their music and not deal with a soldering iron.
Then it got really popular and people were paying sometimes over $200 on eBay for bent Speak&s. Sooo... well... supply and demand, you know? I've still never sold or charged for any bent stuff, ever. But I have friends who have, and I respect what it has done for them. One of my friends sold bent stuff for years and put all of that money into better pro gear for his studio. It paid off, because he just got some checks from TV networks for using his tracks on the air. And then that money will take him even further. Like stepping stones, you know?
Some might view this as selling out, but I think that is a line that is only crossed when you give up on your "big picture" creative goals in favor of money. See Jesse "Tablebeast" as another example of selling bent instruments being stepping stones on a creative path.
I guess what I'm trying to say is, it's not wrong to charge money for stuff like that as long as your intentions are good. Publish all of your work and findings, give fully detailed documentation away for free, but please do make some money off of your work on the hardware. The money will enable further creative persuits. Nothing wrong with that.
For a really souped up SK-1 like that, with all of the extra controls, fancy extra case, etc, you're probably looking at $200+. But if it's on eBay, just start it at something reasonable like $50 or the cost of the keyboard and all of the parts, no reserve, no buy it now, just let the people decide. It will get bid up, especially with all of the cross posting your creation has gotten on higher-profile synth blogs.
Good luck! And, are you going to publish complete docs for your mods? I'm just curious what all of that stuff does. My SK-1s don't have anywhere near that many controls...
Edit: looks like tablebeast stiill regularly sells SK-1s for over $200 (see here and here). So with all of your extra work, it will likely be worth over $300 on eBay. As silly as things like an "artist edition" may be, there's really nothing wrong with selling something that people want. It might be nice if he included some links to Ghazala's site, if nothing else... |

I feel like a dick posting this--but anyways I am not trying to be a smart ass, just saying that here is a ms20 styled sk1 someone else built. I assume the builders were different people.
Anyway the newer one seems way slicker, and without a doubt IS slicker as far as aesthetics are conscerned.
I wish I had more info on the older model sos I could compare the two side by side, ya know.

The electrifire page has my old sk-1.org page which has been gone for years. I have a mk II model but never got around to finishing my tutorial for that and now I am working on finishing my mk III model so maybe I'll just move on to that for an updated tutorial. If you have any questions please let me know. I'm still amazed at how much bent stuff uses the RCA patchbay for mods, it was just a means to an end with my second SK-1 mod back like 2001. I think diabolical devices idea to use banana jacks is better and I will probably use that on my new mk III. |

| Shoot I just went to the electrifire link and see the links don't seem to work. I'll see if I can round the info up somewhere or just light a fire under myself for the mk II or III tutorial. Also, I don't know circuit-bent.com any more and haven't for years. Not much bending going on lately as I have focused on tube circuits since 2006. I will be reviving some bending mods soon though with my updated SK-1, SK-5, MT-240, Speak & Spell, and Akai S612 Pair built for a live performance rig. |
