PostPosted: Sat Nov 20, 2010 8:09 am    Post subject:  Organised Sound with Dr. Steve
Subject description: Sundays 2000 GMT | 3PM EST - New show in appreciation of electro-music
Reply with quote  Mark this post and the followings unread

I have been thinking of doing a show for sometime with various formats and it all came together following the recent "What is Music?" discussions in chat and on "Edison's Electronic Review."

Edgar Varese defined music as organised sound. That definition has worked for me for a long while. So, this show will explore music as organised sound. It will be in appreciation of electro-music and will represent high quality diversity (HQV). It will include music/sounds posted to the electro-music.com archives, selections from latency jams, and organised sounds that others have shared with me or given me permission to play. The show will also include talk--comments about the specific music played as well as comments about music theory, philosophy, technique, etc.

A feature of the show will be "Dr. Steve's Journal"--an opportunity to talk a little and then improvise a bit.

Episode 1 will happen on Sunday, 21 November 2010 at 2000 GMT after Dan Minñoza's "Circular Resonance."

UPDATE:
With the change back to Standard Time, Organized Sound starts at 3:00 pm EDT.

UPDATE (2013-07-03):
I haven't been doing the show for several months as everyone who used to listen knows. It had become an issue of competition for limited resources having to spend more and more time looking for material, since less seemed to be turning up in the forum. That required looking elsewhere, checking licensing details, and finding a much smaller percentage of music I was into than I could find by simply reviewing what was posted by members here.

As listeners know, at one point I came up with the "Welcome to Zone 11712" theme--using the new playlist system to program new shows on a weekly basis of music from MusicMan11712. It consisted of improvs from the "Organized Sound with Dr. Steve" shows, other improvs I did either on the open port or my port (not as part of the show), PHOBoSized collaborations, excepts from collaborative jams, and older material I discovered on my hard drive.

Then, I got a new sound card, installed it, had it crash, and was not able to get my PC's audio working without generating periodic noises whenever the system was doing something--including text scrolling in chat. My plan had been to fix that and to rethink the show.

In the meantime, (1) I have missed creating music and (2) I have noticed how wonderful a job Robsol has been doing updating the playlist by adding newly posted material. So, the future of the "Organized Sound" show is very much up-in-the-air.

From my point of view, it has been a great run. I really enjoyed going through the electro-music holdings (newly posted and historical) to select and play tunes. It is a great treasure check of what I think of as high quality diversity in electronic music.

As well, I have greatly enjoyed the flexibility to do improvs when the muse pushed me to be creative. When I did my first improv here (NYE 2009), I was filled with terrifying anxiety. And I am very grateful for the opportunity over the years to work on that and develop a certain level of increased comfort by doing the improvs on the show.

To all that listened faithfully as your schedules permitted, thanks!! The encouragement of your listenership and participation in chat is much appreciated.

Steve

Great show dr. steve. Really enjoyed the extensive background info on the tracks and I think I heard a few things I never heard before wich is always a good thing.

For this show I was going to play a few of the sets from the 2010-2011 New Year's Event that listeners might have missed or wanted to hear again. However, with encouragement from the chatters, what emerged was as "Monster Mash" of 14 sets. It is amazing how the sounds mixed. Thanks to all the artists who gave of themselves through the gift of music.

Evidently the file didn't get attached. I will try again tomorrow.

Here's my live performance from the 48 LIVE! event. I tried to achieve an assortment of things--from harmony to cacophony, from mellow to tense, from pensive to mindlessness, from melodramatic to groovy--in the fluid medium we call music. I hope you enjoy it.
