Some thoughts:

1.

Try this:
http://www.google.com/search?&rls=en&q=Reading+Is+Fundamental+Funding+Eliminated

2.
That the funding ended the way it did does not say anything fundamental about your beloved president.

3.
OK, so Obama is an enemy of the people? That doesn´t quite compute.
He could of course be blamed for being damned late. Lloyd George brought about the beginnings of the welfare state in 1909.

I´m quite familiar with the writings of both.

Well..

Any suggestions on how he should have attempted to solve the immediate problems when the bank crisis hit?

Our newly minted Republican governor has just proposed cutting funding for all public universities -- that is to say, universities for the not rich, like the one where I teach -- back to 1983 levels, which is to say, a 50% cut in state funding, which is 15% of our budget. A lot of good students won't be able to afford the resulting leap in tuition. At the same time, he is giving tax breaks to petrol companies to come in and tap the Marsellus Shale gas while polluting the crap out of the ground water and contributing nothing to state infrastructure or reduction of the debt or much in the way of jobs.

What kills me is that many of those affected stayed at home on election day, whining about Obama I guess, instead of getting their ignorant butts out and voting for a governor who wouldn't demolish their shot at education. You don't win a war overnight, and you sure as hell don't win a war by sitting around and bitching.

"American? We're as American as apple pie and lynch mobs." Jerry Garcia

Well said. Smile

I'm also sickened by those in this country, who dare call themselves "anarchists". They're really liberals at heart, they wear the anarcho-syndicalist red and black tee-shirt (for a pose, naturally), sit around bitching, oppose free speech of all those who don't share their opinions or views (apparently there is no argument Confused ), and most of all don't vote at election day. At least spoil your ballot paper- I mean how else are you going to stand up and be counted?

My problem is that while I like to take action, I can't see any action to take.

Cynicism and seeming idealism are two sides of a coin. Most change is incremental. You noodle things along, and when they backslide, you retrench and noodle them along again. Occasionally some collective need for faster change reaches critical mass, and some change happens until the pressure is relieved, but after that it's back to incremental change.

Physics, politics, social change -- it's all the same.

Beautifully put. The larger a mass of people is...the more momentum it has and the more energy it takes to effect change. Also, the longer change takes. The harder things crash when sent in the wrong direction. Push them, and eventually the pendulum will swing back in the opposite direction. Splinter them, and you have less mass to effect, and control is much easier.

Also related, the larger a mass of people is, the simpler the common denominator is that is shared amongst them. It is my only explanation of why pop(ular) music is so devoid of anything beyond simplistic lyrics and basic beats.

But politics is always about the lesser evil. Short of revolution/war it is like steering a giant ship, and things happen with little nudges. If all you do is complain, you're not really in the game.
