Subject description: re-ordered a few spares...
Reply with quote  Mark this post and the followings unread

Hi all,

quite some time ago Thomas asked me to do a test built of his X-4046 VCO. on this occasion i made some proto PCBs for the VCO core + expo current source (tri/saw outputs). Later on i made a 2nd PCB with the waveshapers (tri2sine/pulse/PWM + rampoid).
All worked out very well and i built a Dual VCO module from it (refer to pictures and sound samples below). The VCO pleases me very well and it now the bread-and-butter VCO of my system. BTW i calibrated it using my 12V rig, now i use it with 15V without any changes...

More info on this VCO here:
http://www.birthofasynth.com/Thomas_Henry/Pages/X-4046.html

and here:
http://electro-music.com/forum/topic-42721.html

building docs for the fonitronik PCBs can now be found here:
TH X-4046 VCO doc 5/30/2011 (rev2)
old documentation had an error: R2 must be 390R (NOT 100k)

now the good news: Thomas gave me his GO for doing a PCB run for this project. so i would offer a PCB for the VCO core + expo current source and a 2nd PCB with the waveshapers (which you could use independently) - as long as there is enough interest. so just indicate your serious interest in this PCBs.

the PRICES (revised for low quantity re-order)
7.- EUR/10.-USD for the VCO core PCB (saw/tri)
and
5.- EUR/7.-USD for the waveshaper PCB (tri2sin/pulse/PWM)

+ p/p
Deutschland: 1.- EUR/2 PCBs, 1.50 EUR/3+ PCBs
Europe: 2.- EUR/2 PCBs, 4.- EUR/3+ PCBs
Outside Europe: 4.- USD/2 PCBs, 6.- USD/3+ PCBs

NOOOOO!!! Another project... And I think I have most if not all the parts in stock already. Just when I thought I had to stop building electronics stuff (at least for some time, after finishing my studio rack project) and my modular enclosures have been full for a while.... Laughing

That means, interested in two of both.

Damn, why 2 pcb's when you simply can merge both on one and manufacture it for the same price

You could have done the shaper on one pcb and the full vco on another pcb

there is no logic into it,sorry

Hi Fonik,

what´s the size of your frontpanel (hp)?

Would you like to share the fpd-file? Design is great! thumb up

Which brand of 14046 did you use?

Thanks! Very Happy

Probably 'cause some people (like me) intend to order some of the waveshapers separately so that they can use them elsewhere. I hate building PCBs from scratch so if there's a waveshaper that'll take a tri and convert it into sine/pusle/pwm...why the heck not order some for use in other projects?

the PCB designs are already tested, since i made them for test-build purposes. they require no additional prototyping. a re-design would have required a complete prototype build again.
i asked for opinions on the 1 vs 2 PCB issue, and got almost no response, despite a few people saying they prefer two PCBs, or they don't care.
even logic depends of piont of view. Very Happy

it is essential which 4046 you use. refer to scott's site:

i tried an ON Semiconductor MC14046BCP first and could not get it scaled correctly. it fell short of about 1/4 tone per octave.
i then tried the NXP part and scaled the VCO within 5 minutes using an LFO and a quantizer.

But point of view is not always logic.

You can see now that most order the 2 boards because they want to built a full vco... Wink
