Also I may have made some mistakes as I have not built it yet ( I'm in the ordering process for this module). This is based mainly on the V3 BOM published by Topp on his website.

I prefer beads but you can use 10 ohm or 22 ohm resistors as well.
Basically even a link will work. |
Where do you guys source ferrite beads; I used to have a bunch of them, but I can't remember from where they came. The one's that I always see when I look are one's that are just beads, with out leads attached (?) What anyone uses leadless beads for, I don't know. |

Maybe the specs will help to find a sub?

there are some at mouser, but haven't ordered there.
actually i've bought some fairrite beads on ebay, from somewhere in the US. i'm not sure about the right values, but it works, apparently.
i also have some beads without leads, just the hole. i haven't tried them yet, as i'm not sure if the wire put through has to be isolated or can be just blank wire.
at least the wired beads didn't show continuity between the body and the wire.
maybe someone else knows about that? |

Just to be clear, the CD4016B. that would be the same as a CD4016BE right?
And the same question goes for CD4001B, CD4001BE is OK?
This is probably obvious things for most pepole, but I still find IC naming to be very confusing

I think they are the same as I have found no differences between the datasheets.
The "E" may signify that the chip is ROHS compliant or something like that.
Also look for the PDIP 14 package.
So the TI chip is the CD4016BE; but the On Semi is labelled MC14016B...
Same story for the CD4001B. |

Just a few pics of my 281 prototype, Buchla style.
Before ordering a professionally made panel I made a panel out of 3mm thick scrap wood to check out if everything would fit on and behind the panel. The panel design was made in Front Panel Designer and printed on paper.
I made a custom bracket to mount the PCBs so I wouldn't have to drill additional holes in the front panel.
The total depth behind the panel (power cable included) is about 9 cm (3.5").
Looking at it I think I will drill some extra holes in the bracket to allow easier routing of wires to the PCBs.
Although I built a Klee sequencer I am a bit hesitant to start wiring this...
Maybe it gives you some ideas of how to mount everything to your own panel.

I may be alone in this, but I have a problem with actually putting "Buchla & Associates" on the front panel. To me, that moves it from the realm of tribute, into the realm of forgery. _________________ Chris Muir

You may be right about that.
This is just a prototype printed on a piece of paper. Now I think about it, I will remove the name from the final panel.
What I wanted to show however was the mounting of the PCBs to the panel

The panel in the picture would cost 135 Euros at Schaeffer. A bit too much for my taste.

So hey, I'm going to have to put in an order of resistors somewhere because I'm straight out of metal films in some common values.
Buuuuut I still have gobs of 5% carbons laying about. I'm curious what you guys think about using 5%ers in the 281 project? Any particular places I should use tighter tolerance parts? _________________ - r. mosquito

use the 5% resistors anywhere you like if you got em. 49.9Ks aren't available in 5% though. |

OK.......why are there pads between the 49.9K resistors to the top left and right of the 4016, and the 49.9K and 1K* below them?

Isn't it a via? The trace switches from the top to the bottom.

Ah...yeah, could very well be. Just thought they were a bit big for that, I thought usually vias were smaller, though there's no reason they'd have to be. I saw somewhere (was it MOTM kits or Oakley?) suggested you solder vias to make sure there's a good solid connection.
