Here is a progress report. You know me: "blah blah Boolean Sequencer blah blah Second Life blah blah Boolean Sequencer Blah Blah Second Life...", well you get the idea. I'm a broken record sometimes and this project is no exception.

The photo below shows a capacitor object that I created in the virtual world of Second Life. I scripted it in the C-like event driven Linden Scripting Language of Second Life to play some uploaded samples of 4.5 seconds each chopped up from the Proper Scottish Thunder sample from the_ufo. There are four rain and three thunder samples.

The capacitor is physical in the sense of game physics such that an avatar can grab it and roll or push it around or walk into it. Once moved, the X, Y, and Z angles of rotation are digitized into a logic matrix which is then XORed with a counter counting from 0 to 63. Then a logic expression taken from that produces and array index which selects the subsample of rain or thunder.

All that gobldeygook that you just skimmed over is a complicated way of saying you kick the capacitor thingie and it makes a different thunderstorm each time. So next I think I will make a 3D inductor and then script it up with different samples and maybe a resistor too, for a trio of sounds. Then I'll move them around and listen to the result. i may even move them during the recording for fun, it's scripted to allow that without reset. Cool huh?

Oh, and i made an inductor too, also shown in photo. Sounds much more like real rainstorm with two of them playing different sequences and not in phase.

Well, that's my progress report.

Les

Sent Smile

If you want to hear it early it's on my soundcloud:
http://soundcloud.com/mefistophelees/knights-of-the-fielding-way

This track is based on 4 samples taken from the following 4 recordings:

Mantra:
Choir sounds - Cleaned up with an MS-20 filter

Recycling centre:
All percussion

GesheTsodu2:
Starting voice - I had to "De-process" this to make it sound like a single voice

fermilab__another_power_supply:
Bagpipes and strings - Cleaned up with an MS-20 filter. Heavily processed with a Pod HD500.

The sounds were recorded and played via MIDI on a Kurzweil K2500RS, the track was recorded in Logic.

Additional processing:
Lexicon MX400 (Global Reverb / Chorus)
Mackie (EQ)
Logic (Compression, EQ)
K2500RS (Chorus)

Creating this track was a long, complicated process which involved learning a lot about a number of different areas. It's not the best track in the world and certainly not the best mixed but it was a lot of fun to make.

This turned out to be way more difficult than I thought.
I wanted to do something tuneful for the start so that limited the sounds to "tones". There aren't many of these and what there are can be out of tune and even untuneable.

I did various experiments with sounds and had some good ones but the power supply turned out to be difficult to process. Eventually I threw some heavy weaponry at it - the Pod HD500. I'm probably the only person in the world with a guitar processor with a preset called "Bagpipe Biggeriser".

I didn't use the other experiments I asked about earlier in the thread, I'm keeping them for something else.

Probably not quite what you were expecting, but it was fun to make.

Cheers!

All I did was make the thunderstorm recording. I was going to do all kinds of processing to it in ChucK but soundflower screwed up on me (again) and I could not route the audio. Should I publish just a thunderstorm? That's all I got.

By: Ethan Drown Hurlburt

For the electro-music "No Labels No Musics 2" Field Recording Composition Project.

Sound sources and treatments are as follows:

Shane Morris
- Gourd Water Drums

Edited in DAW to make one shots.
Sampled into an SP-404 where patterns were sequenced.
Processed by stereo envelope filter and modular synthesizer
to sculpt the ‘kick, toms, snare, rim’ sounds.

Rtech / Biokit (alivemachine.com)
- Steady (Palm Tree Leaves processed with granular synthesis)

Sampled into an SP-404 using the chromatic pitch shifter to set up a note for each pad. Ptterns were sequenced in the sampler.
Processed in parallel via stereo envelope filter, modular synthesizer, and dimension chorus.
This is the ‘demented farfisa’ sound.

OCP
- Beating a Dead Piano
- Injured Steinway

Edited in DAW and sampled into SP-404.
Some samples reversed or resampled with pitch shifter manual sweep.
Processed by stereo envelope filter.

Dr. Minoza
- John Deere 111

Sampled into SP-404 with EQ.
Processed with stereo envelope filter.
