Hey everybodies!
Just a quick hello to let you know I might drop around here again a bit more now.
It seems the problem with my back fuelled a downward spiral which hung around for too long.
I'm on some new happy pills now, we've moved into a new house, I'm going to do some more technician work from home, my wife just got a part time job, I've started an audio production course, and have started jamming/recording again with a new guitar buddy.
I hope you are all going well.
I know this message is full of partially revealed stories, and a bit rushed, (I've got lots of house work to do! lol) but feel free to explore any ideas, inspirations it may trigger for you.
Peace and love to all,
Andrew Sharp

Thanks everyone for the warm welcome back.
I'll elaborate a bit on the first post now that I've got a bit of time.
Yeah, the back thing, and getting off narcotic based pain killers, and losing my job, kinda left me slipping into a major depression, which the antidepressants I was on had no chance of fighting. I'm on a new drug now, which seems to be doing a great job, also did a lot of heavy shit trawling with my counsellor, which has had a big impact. I'm getting help with employment prospects etc as well.
But by far the best thing is our new house (renting). It's got about a 1/5th the lawn to mow, open living area with lounge/dining/kitchen/computers all in the same space. A separate room downstairs which we've set up as a music studio/guest room. Lock up garage which has enough space at the end for an electronics workshop, and my newly acquired hobby of home beer brewing. Internal laundry, heated bathroom, etc. etc. All for just an extra $30 p/w!
I've got a few hundred business cards made up for just $40 and am going to expand my ability to fix electronics, specialising in audio equipment and musical instruments. I don't think it will make for a full time job, but Felicity has just got 3 days a week in a job which actually uses one of her degrees. That's not an easy thing to do in a sleepy beachside town like Nambucca Heads.
I've completed the first course in audio production and sound design at the Coffs Harbour Regional Conservatorium, and I got 100% for all 10 tests and the final exam! I'm not really surprised, (and neither was the teacher) it was an introductory course, and I've been playing around with this stuff for almost 30 years. But it is really great sometimes to simply make connections with like minded people, and remind yourself that you are knowledgable, skilled, and competent. These pieces of your self esteem get a real bashing from an episode of depression.
Now I've started the advanced course which follows on from there. It will be mostly focused on us (4 in the class) producing a complete piece of music from start to mastering.
I've set up my music stuff in the room downstairs, away from the electronics repairs and research lab in the garage. I would definitely recommend this idea. It makes it so much easier to focus on what I want to achieve (in both spaces). If a piece of equipment isn't ready to be played, it's not in the music space. Heaps less cluttered and confusing.
I've also come up with a great new way of connecting my mixer with the new computer! (a cobbled together XP setup, so I can still get at all my old projects which are still on Cakewalk Pro-Audio 8!) It will be improved over time, and I'll be installing Sonar and Cubase fairly soon. I want to know a few different DAWs so I can offer tutorials on how to do home recording as well as the hardware side of audio, and IT support.
I'm also jamming again with a Canadian dude I met through Felicity's connections at the school. He's into world music and reggae, but is cool with doing more electronic stuff too. We've already started learning the studio by recording an original reggae track of his, and my bass playing skills are coming back quite fast!
Okay, I think that's all of my update news for now.
If anyone has any advice about my business ideas, I'd love to hear them. I don't feel up to going full on yet, but I'm getting my name out there, and taking on what I can. The way I see it, why re-invent myself when I have the skills and knowledge to make a (partial) living. I just need to work out how to do it in a fairly slim market.
I'll post some info about the new music setup soon. Not sure which sub to put it in yet.
See ya round!

Welcome back Uncle!
I have had depression problems in the past and still have to keep an eye on it. It's refreshing to see you being so upfront about it - I think that helps too.
It's heart warming to read about all the good things that are happening in your life. Congratulations! _________________ Muied Lumens Sub Forum

Just a quick note to let you all know that the dudes at my course have decided to produce my song! Very proud, and a bit anxious about whether it will come up to scratch! |
