AU sampler that returns sample number?

Hi,

I'm using an audio programming language that lets you access an apple Audio Unit (AU).

I want to do the following:

-A musical wave is looping and I want to know its phase

-I ask the Audio Unit to give me the current sample number

-I calculate the phase using this formula:
phase = sample_number/total_number_of_samples
which gives me a number between 0 and 1 (ie the phase)

-Then I use this phase information in my algorithm.

Anyone know an AU that gives up the sample number if asked?

Someone emailed me suggesting that OSX Lion ships with apple's own sample synth: AUSampler. He speculates that it might give the current sample number, but he wasn't sure.

Anyone know?
