That's a nice bit of DIY 909 going on there! Does it sound anything like the original?

Hi:
Thank you all for the comments!!!

The TR-9090 project is here:
http://introspectiv.org/
You can still buy PCBs.

The mods for the 808 are here:
http://xlargex.xl.funpic.de/
Actually the project includes the mods, but you can find the differences with the original.

I mean, I would also love to buy single-voice PCBs.

OK, I finished the three voice only boards (four voices per board), now it's time to lay out the individual voice boards. Do you guys care what the form factor is? In other words, should I just make the boards as small as possible with mounting holes on the corners, or should I try to make them fit a particular bracket or front panel?

I would suggest making them as small as possible with Euro formats in mind (possibly with pot and jack pads for PCB mount components), but also with mounting holes so that those of us who don't like to use panel mounted pots can mount them on a bracket.

For most universal appeal, probably good to allow several types of power connectors...what voltages do these run on? I'm sure you'll get a mix of people using -/+12V and -/+15V on their systems.

I've always run these things at 15V. I have a bench power supply; I'll test at 12V and see how that sounds...

EDIT: P.S. I don't have any Euro stuff, but I'll check out the format specs. (I have mainly MOTM, with a bit of Blacet.)

There are four voices on each board. I nicknamed the boards "white", "pink" and "schmitt" because most of the voices depend upon one of those sound generators. (Only the kick and rimshot don't.)

The first board has:

Kick
White noise generator
Snare (uses white noise)
Maraca (uses white noise)
Clap (uses white noise)

Second board has:

Pink noise generator
Low Tom (uses pink noise)
Mid Tom (uses pink noise)
High Tom (uses pink noise)
Rimshot/Clave

Third board has:

Schmitt oscillators
Cowbell (uses Schmitt)
Cymbal (uses Schmitt)
Open Hat (uses Schmitt)
Closed Hat (uses Schmitt)

I also thought about having two boards, one with the noise generator and the six voices that depend on it and a second board with the schmitt circuit and the four voices that depend on it plus the kick and rimshot:

Snare
Low Tom
Mid Tom
High Tom
Maraca
Clap

Kick
Rimshot/Clave
Cowbell
Cymbal
Open Hat
Closed Hat

Those seemed to be the two most logical combinations.

Amazing Smile

Any idea when these might be ready for purchase (sorry, very early days i know). Boards 1 and 3 for me for a start, then 2.

Cheers

Can't give you a firm date at the moment. I'll be out of town on business until October 15. The prototype boards should be here when I get back, so I'll build them and make sure there are no problems. There shouldn't be any problems, since these are the same circuits I use in the MB-808, but I may have made a mistake somewhere, so I'll build prototypes just to be sure. Once I have built a good prototype, I'll have a stack of pcbs made and then let everyone know they're available... Smile

The full MB-808 is the highest priority project in my queue right now and I don't plan to ship anything else until this batch of MB-808 kits is out the door. Heck, I haven't built anything for myself for over two years... Sad

That´s what I like best. Two boards would be cool!

Yeah, actually the 2-board idea looks pretty ideal.

Thought I should publish some of the details of the multi-voice boards in case anyone has heartburn about the way I'm doing this...

There is no power supply on the voice boards, that is, no regulators, so a separate +/-15V power source is required. (I have not tested with +/-12V, so I don't know how that will work.)

There are three headers for each voice, a three pin trigger and accent input header, a two pin sound output header, and a header for controls (Potentiometers and switches.)

There is no LED driver. I was thinking that could be included on whatever sends the trigger pulse. Is that a problem?

The individual voice boards will be similar, but I'll look at using pcb mount potentiometers for panel mounting.

(Should I start a new thread for all of this, or should I continue to hijack this one?)

The way you're doing it sounds fine to me, too.

It's DIY. If people want/need an LED driver for the inputs, they can always add them, or do as you suggest and just use the trigger source.

What kind of trigger do these need, BTW?

I like the idea of 2 boards as well for my new diy drum sound module .

Maybe a new thread just to clarify who wants a 2 pcb whole sound set or individual pcb voices , would be a good idea Smile

Thanks for spending time on this Doug , your a star Smile
