OK.. this update was a real bummer. Apple will fix it. But until then approx 20-30 percent of Apple TV 2 owners will experience the dreaded "USB -> iTunes restore" fuckup.

You are being told that what you need to do is to connect a USB Micro cable to a mac with iTunes. First of all.. that mac better run 10.7. You could possibly get by with 10.6.8 but it seems this is buggy.
Second... you won´t get there with a standard USB micro cable. Forcing a mini or micro plug into the Apple TV 2 will destroy the socket.

Explanation: What you reallly need is a USB micro M/M cable.. exactly like the odd ones that come bundled with many mobile phones. These are used with phones like the recent Nokia mobiles. A Nokia branded cable will do just fine. These are usually pretty expensive, but a no-brand cable will do just as fine.. partly because it is hilariously cheap. These cables will usually never be in the computer section of a tech shop. Check out the no-brand USB stuff in the cell phone acc. department instead.

Anyways.. connect your Apple TV 2 to a mac with 10.7... using the correct cable.. and start iTunes. You will figure out the rest.

Keep in mind that it is not wise to expect that you can have the HDMI plug connected at the same time as the Micro USB plug. Unplug the HDMI while you perform the restore procedure. There is simply not room for both plugs at the same time. Forcing the HDMI in will likely make a mess of the plug assembly inside the box... on the PCB. Be gentle!

It is highly likely that iTunes will finally report that the process could not be performed because of an error. It is also highly likely it went just fine the first time anyway. Disconnect the USB and connect the HDMI cable.

While in the initial setup procedure ( that the Apple TV will automatically start for your ) be aware that if there are many Wi-Fi base stations around you might not see your own or the correct one at first. Just go back with the menu button and click OK.. and then do it again manually in the preferences.

Fact is that the device wasn´t really bricked at all as it was recoverable using the iTunes restore procedure.

After the restore the Apple TV 2 was still victim of the recent "how do I get rid of the last movie I saw" bug. The last movie ( from my shared iTunes library will start playing when I say go to preferences and start to edit the networking setup, or browse trailers or whatever. This is a new bug introduced by a fairly recent firmware update.
