Apple has announced that they are releasing the Apple Lossless Audio Codec as an open source project:
The Apple Lossless Audio Codec (ALAC) is a lossless audio codec developed by Apple and deployed on all of its platforms and devices for some years now. Apple is making the Apple Lossless Audio Codec (ALAC) available as an open source project. Full details can be found on the Apple Lossless Audio Codec project page. _________________ A Charity Pantomime in aid of Paranoid Schizophrenics descended into chaos yesterday when someone shouted, "He's behind you!"

Big plus - it is lossless. Big minus - compressed files are only about 40-60% of the size of the original format (presumably CD audio format, or PCM encoding).
But this is actually rather a nice gesture on Apple's part. The cynical side of me wonders about the patent protection afforded to developers. Apple has been no great friend to open source.
Now to figure out if our Shoutcast radio can decode these pups. never mind that the larger file sizes will mess with servers/bitrates etc. And ALAC codecs have already been available in Linux for some time. _________________ Garret: It's so retro.

ALAC is a brilliant master/archive/transport format. _________________ A Charity Pantomime in aid of Paranoid Schizophrenics descended into chaos yesterday when someone shouted, "He's behind you!"

I tested the early stuff out and it worked pretty good. The audio streaming engine is absolutely OK. I reckon I will take a hard look at the QT streaming stuff again soon, but in order to do that I need to set up 10.7 server. I have lotsa 10.6.8 servers but they are busy with other stuff.
There is a lot of info over at the Apple site somewhere and there are forums and lists dedicated to QT streaming server. _________________ A Charity Pantomime in aid of Paranoid Schizophrenics descended into chaos yesterday when someone shouted, "He's behind you!"
