I had met him in 1989 in Albany, NY at Intelligent Music's headquarters.

Oh no. He was such a great guy, and a superb musician. A truly gentle soul. I was lucky enough to share the stage with him on several occasions. Very sad. He will be missed _________________ --Howard

Yes, this news is very sad. It's sad to think about someone with as much creative energy as Richard had leaving this world. _________________ When the stream is deep

Eulogies, of course, are for the living, and cannot bring back what has now passed; nevertheless, I am so stunned at the moment, having only found out this news just a few short hours ago, that I am at something of a loss of words.
Richard's pedigree as an electronic musician was unquestionable, and his work to this day was an ever-evolving organism of ideas, textures, approaches, and directions. I can now only feel deeply honored that I was able to release his remaining 80s works, Polychromatic Integers, on my label this past year.
The even sadder irony of this news is that Richard & his work remained largely unsung to the general electronic(a) community, despite his being a tireless performer & supporter of the genre; in fact, Richard was one of the fiercest supporters of my efforts with OTP, having attended virtually every performance regardless of his own personal taste, and lending an hand on untold occasions for various technical & a/v matters where they needed addressing. He was primed to be one of the performers at the mini-fest I've been organizing in Philly for late March, and the fact that he now will not be there fills me with immense & profound regret.
Like most artists, under-recognized or not, what we now have left is the legacy of his work to savor & relish.
It's been a tough year for our genre/community, and not exactly the way I wanted to usher in 2012.

RIP Richard
I am speechless. Having had the pleasure of meeting Richard on a few occasions, and hearing him perform, and giving workshops, will be a treasured memory for me. He was quick to respond to a few email questions that I had, and always pointed me in the right direction. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family. There was even one occasion where I had a screw loose that was lost. Being the person he was, he found it and returned it to me. Some folks think that I always had a screw loose. I will miss both Richard and Mel. |

Oh My God! That's such a shame. I met him at the Soundscapes show he did last year - what a nice guy.

I remember being blown away by Richard's Buchla performance on a new year's eve event perfornance here - the first or second. Terrible news, he had more to give. _________________ Antimon's Window

Richard will be sadly missed for the sound that he made.
Having only once the pleasure to witness and hear his unsurpassed talent on the 200e, I am saddened to know I will never have that pleasure again.

Very few people really inspire me musically these days but Richard was one of those who did, I could never begin to approach the sounds he made with his Continuum and Buchla rig, but I tried my best
He will be sorely missed

Very sad news. I watched a couple of his performances on YouTube, the Buchla pieces. Richard was one of those musicians who's music you couldn't ignore or leave on 'in the background'- something that's quite rare these days.

I heard this news just as I was about to perform my NYE set.
Richard's influence on the E-M community here cannot be underestimated. He was a consummate musician and a wonderful and supportive human being. His attendance at the EM festivals was always looked forward to, as whatever he used in performance was always an example and an inspiration. _________________ Garret: It's so retro.

"Gone, the intricate knowledge."
I had the pleasure of performing the Crater Dust collaboration with Richard at E-M '10. I felt privileged to share the stage with him. I knew the first time I heard him (EM '09) that here was a real musician who understood the secret of creating music with electronic sounds as profound as anything in the thousand year tradition of Western music. _________________ Steve Bowman

The recording of that collaboration, with Richard and Mel both performing, is posted here. I'd like to thank Steve again for inviting me to perform with three such great musicians _________________ When the stream is deep

Such a loss. |
It was weird knowing Mel died and yet seeing on Facebook that "Mel Morley shared a link".
I know, someone else did it, but you know what I mean. _________________ Audiodef
