I thought I'd spend an hour transmitting some old scetches of mine on open, tonight at 21.00 GMT 2011-06-25, one hour before chez mosc, if that's ok.

Hi Jez.

As we discussed in another thread (em2011, I think), if you are interested in yielding your Sept. 7 slot per below, let me know for sure, and I'll start scouting a student to run the stream. If not, that's fine.

Also, again, you are more than welcome to attend this event. If I weren't tied up with it and associated commitments, I'd drive you down here Very Happy It's only 30 minutes from Allentown.

Hope all is well, and quiet in Nottingham. Quite a week. Linda and I are at home, safe and sound. We had an amazing 2 weeks in the UK!

That would be 18:00 until 20:00 EDT, which I believe is 22:00 until midnight GMT. Only 4 hours when we Pennsylvanians are in daylight savings time, I think.

The event is a computer music seminar that will include two pieces by myself and some students in our university's planetarium. Michael O'Bannon has very graciously agreed to stop over on his way to electro-music 2011 to perform video magic on the planetarium dome. Between pieces Michael will give a talk and demo on EEG-to-music and some of his development process, and I will give some kind of technical talk.

It is likely to run a little less than 2 hours, so we can say 90 minutes if that makes sense. This may run into Jez or Rob's Adventures, although with electro-music 2011 kicking off two days later, it may not. If so, we can always record it and stream the good bits later.

The planetarium has an interesting placement of 5 speakers around the base of the dome + subwoofer, not exactly surround 5.1 placement, but, given a circular room, circular seating and heads pointed towards a domed ceiling, it's bound to be unique. Jeremy and Dr. Phill Reed of the Physics Dept. and I did sound and projector checks yesterday. It promises to be fun Exclamation

Hi Dale, it looks like I'll be coming to your event with Bill Fox, so you are most welcome to my slot Smile

(and if there is time for a support slot, I could bring my gear Wink )

Cool! I'll start looking for a student and check out the room for any potential streaming problems.

Excellent! We have been advertising 6-8 PM to the students, but I figured we'd run only 90 minutes, so you are welcome to be our Guest Performer in the final 30 minute slot.

In that case you should plan to arrive at 5 PM, and also let me know your space requirements. The center of the room where the students and I will be set up is likely to be cluttered, so we'll probably place you at the perimeter next to where Michael O'Bannon will be set up for performing video. You'll get a much better view of his work from there.

Even if you decide not to play, it would be good to arrive at 5:30, because there are only 85 seats. I have no good idea what attendance will be. I think we can squeeze in 100 in a pinch.

I'll assume that you'll play, then, and wait to hear from you on space / table requirements. This will be exciting! Thanks.

Cool

I've always wanted to play a planetarium, there just aren't that many in the UK anymore

I would just need a small table (approx 100cm x 70 cm), as I can't bring much stuff on the plane (nord modular, blofeld, vss30, mixer, filter, repeater, delay)

I'll check with Bill to make sure we'll be able to get there early enough

If he fancies it we might do something together

If you want it could be a special extended edition of AIS

This is a first time for me. There are three in this area -- the one at Kutztown University is midway between one in Reading and one in Allentown -- I've never seen the latter -- I plan to do a bit of research into their sound systems and projectors / projection software over the next two years, some time after EM2011.

This one has very precise but asymmetric speaker placement at the base of the dome:
C is 0 degrees
Left Rear is 67.5 degrees (to the right of 0 as you face 0, although "center" makes no sense in a circular room with circular seating facing the middle of the room)
Left Front is 112.5 degrees
Right Front is 202.5 degrees
Right Rear is 292.5 degrees
Subwoofer is non-spatial as always

They are all at precise multiples of 22.5 degrees (360 / 16), but no one knows why that particular placement. I have gone reading Internet posts, and from what I have seen, there are no standards for planetariums.

I don't have time to do anything fancy, so my plan is to run my left & right stereo channels to 2 of those, run Jeremy's (my student / son) to two others, and mix us down to mono for the fifth and the subwoofer. I have not figured out which to send to which yet.

The sound system will also accept a stereo pair and do its own mix for the speaker arrangement. I haven't had time to determine what that mix is, but it should be OK as a default if you just want to feed the system a stereo pair.

No problem.

Sounds good. Let me know what he decides, so I know how many tables to plan for spacing. It'll be cozy, although not as cozy as the London Tube at rush hour! Worse than Tokyo, although when I rode it in Tokyo in 2005, I may have avoided rush hour.

Checked the planetarium LAN today to make sure that the ports for chat and outgoing stream are not blocked on campus -- thanks to Jan and Phobos for their help -- looks good for streaming on September 7.

I'm going to do another sketch show this evening at 20.30 GMT. Already checked this with Shane in the chat, but I figured I ought to post it here as well.

What about Thursday 12?

Since there is no show then, it could be a good time?
I can do it at 23 too.

How much time can I have?

It should be enough time...

How is the streaming process?
Is it similar to NYE?

Easiest probably that way yeah, so lets just do that.

I've added an entry, but did fill in a dummy title for now - please say what you'd want there, and please check if all is like you expected: http://www.electro-music.com/~janpunter/view_schedule.php

The modular failed the week before NYE. That was a bummer, but thanks to our different world, there will be another NYE this year: Chinese new year.

So I'ld like to do another "NYE" show with my modular on the 23rd of January, right after Edisons Electronic Review (so 12 GMT).
