In the Summer of 2011, composer, author and filmmaker Richard Lainhart sat down with I DREAM OF WIRES director Robert Fantinatto to share his thoughts about electronic music, modular synthesizers and his approach to making music. Richard passed away on December 30th, 2011, we've posted this full-length interview for the many people whose lives were touched by his music.

Would anyone be willing to provide a transcript for this RL interview? I would really like to read it, and I can't understand speech from videos. _________________ There's an invisible radio gnome playing a gong from a flying teapot - don't miss out! |

Wow. What a bummer!
I didn't know Richard Lainhart personally but I remember who he is...it was my first E-M and I was surrounded by these people whose names I didn't remember, who were strangers, & I was trying to find a context where I could fit in. Then Richard Lainhart did a workshop & said how he had lived right next door to Jordan Rudess (killer keyboardist for Dream Theater, a band that my family was huge fans of.) I was like "wow, I can't wait to tell my son & daughter--I met someone who jammed with Jordan Rudess!"
Then Mr. Lainhart showed us this awesome Continuum and played a set that blew me away. Meeting great musicians always inspires me. I don't know if I believe in "heaven" but I like to think that somewhere in that "Dark Matter" that surrounds the Galaxy, is where the Souls go. The Souls of the Musicians are out there having an eternal Jam Session that has been going on since the Big Bang & will go on till the NEXT Big Bang. If you close your eyes, sometimes you can even hear the echo of it. _________________ The most important gear is the brain behind the instrument. |

OMG...just heard about this on FB.
I did not know him, but from all the videos I've seen of his live performances I have kept him in mind as one of the best examples of how to perform live synth music. He was a true master, wielding total but organic control over his fluid and evolving musical journeys. The range of tone and expression he got out of his rig set him apart as not just a musician, but an artist, an auteur. I never spoke to him, never conversed with him online, was never lucky enough to see one of his performances live...yet I admired the man and feel sorry that I've lost the opportunity now to do all those things. _________________ Looking for a certain ratio since 1978 |

That's a beautiful sentiment. May I quote it? _________________ There's an invisible radio gnome playing a gong from a flying teapot - don't miss out! |

I've been in touch with Richard's wife. She said I should share this.
A Memorial for Richard Lainhart, Sunday, March 4 - 3PM at Roulette Intermedium, 509 Atlantic Ave, Brooklyn
A program of music and remembrances honoring musician, composer and filmmaker Richard Lainhart (Feb 14, 1953–Dec 30, 2011). The program will be followed by a 30 minute screening/performance of Richard's last film work 'History of the Future' with a live improvised soundtrack by the 'Orchestra of the Future.'
Performance of History of the Future
The film, 'History of the Future' is sourced entirely from technical, medical, and instructional animations from the 30s through the 70s, all of it public-domain content from the Prelinger Archives. There are no cartoons as such, and nothing comedic, although neither is there anything graphic or otherwise objectionable - much of it is fairly mysterious, in fact. The film is entirely silent, and so all the soundtrack audio will come from the players.
Please RSVP to Caroline Meyers, cmeyers@otownmedia.com. Thank you.

Also, Caroline wants to do a live webcast. If anyone has any ideas or would like to help, she would appreciate it. _________________ There's an invisible radio gnome playing a gong from a flying teapot - don't miss out! |

To my surprise, there was no single collection of Richard's work on Archive.org. Since I want to include his work on Synthetronica Radio, I decided to start a memorial collection. You can find it here.
All tracks in this collection appear in the main rotation of Synthetronica Radio. _________________ There's an invisible radio gnome playing a gong from a flying teapot - don't miss out! |
