In his description of the schematics of the MFOS Soundlab Ultimate, Ray says:

"Test several 2N3904s to find the noisiest one."
and:
Quote:
"I bought a bunch of 2N5172 NPNs and found that about one in 8 of them stands TALL above the rest as far as noise generation."

How does one measure the noise? Is there a special circuit to test this, like Ray's breadboardcircuit for transistor matching?

nothing fancy, just start putting them into the circuit until you find one that puts out a decent level of noise. instead of soldering them in, you could just use test lead clips until you find the one... sometime you have to go thru a dozen or so to find a good one. besides the 5172 and 3904, i've also gotten good results w/ 2n2222s.
