I've just sold mine. But before it went I toyed with the idea of swapping out the tone control and replacing it with a decay control for the bass drum.
In the usual Tom fashion I never got round to doing the mod. _________________ ACHTUNG!

There is no firmware. The machine has no processor.
The CD4011 is a bit fussy ... a few years ago I repaired one of these machines with a bad 4011, and the replacement I used caused pattern writing to work incorrectly. A different 4011 fixed the problem. I'd probably try to stick to the original RAM IC too.
You might have a bit of trouble getting the exact same transistors specified, particularly the 2SA733P (the same high-gain that people try to snatch up for their x0xb0xes).
It never occurred to me to just copy the whole circuit and make your own, but it should actually be pretty straightforward.
I think the sequencer on this drum machine is pretty crappy by today's standards, but it might be worthwhile just to do the sounds. Remember, it doesn't even allow you to program hihat parts! Also, by using an external sequencer you can put a long or short gate on the snare sound (listen to the offbeat snares on the opening of "Computer World" by Kraftwerk - it is most definitely a DR-55) |

The sequencer is a MAJOR PITA to program!!! The main reason why I sold it. However, the actual box when running is funky as hell! Think Led Zep does Electro! _________________ ACHTUNG!

I may have a few already

right? it didn't occur to me either until I recently saw that the PCB image is pretty clearly printed in the service manual, and the machine itself is incredibly simple.
The only thing is, there are a a bunch of 'clones' from the time period. As a lot of Roland stuff, I guess they licenced many of their circuits. ButI find that each of the clones are slightly better in different ways from the original. i may wait and pick up one of these others-- like the Sound master, etc, and scan the PCB.

Yeah, it's totally crappy, and a terrible pain to sequence-- but it has an undeniable charm. I'm not even a depeche mode fan (i suspect this is why this machine has become so collectable), but I love the early New Order tacks that were made using this box-- and it does sound pretty cool and different than both the more sophisticated XoX boxes, and earlier preset machines. Despite it's many drawbacks, it has a kind of uniquely raw electronic sound. |

The DR-55 can be the clock for external gear and the programmable accent can be used for stepping/triggering whatever. _________________ A Charity Pantomime in aid of Paranoid Schizophrenics descended into chaos yesterday when someone shouted, "He's behind you!"

I had the same problem for long time until have found the solution.
Is easy to fix it changing C46 to 10NF cap, an will work with any 4011 series.
In the service manual they say "machines with SN up to 923500 CD40UB only". this is because the propagation delay time of this chip is faster than other 4011s (a half) and the delay formed with Q16 C46 etc is not enough to feed the flip flop and the memory on time (must be double). _________________ Nueva web y foro sobre sintes en español en
